Weekend

Another quiet weekend with the added bonus of catching up with the family.  We had two Grandchildren that started school recently, but how different there introduction to school has been.  Hector was given quite a soft start doing a couple of hours a day for the first week and is quite unsettled.  Whilst Honey, met her teacher in the garden with a home visit and started full days straight away.  She seems to have settled reasonably well.  Both of them are disappointed that they don't see their elder sibling.  Both looked so cute in their school uniforms, they melted my heart.  Hector had to have a few days off , in fact the whole family were self isolating as Hector had a temperature and a cough. The normal starting/back to school virus that sweeps throughout the school when they all get together after the summer.  Sadly, he had to be tested and get a negative result before he was allowed back to school.  The negative result was never really in doubt but getting booked in for a test was quite the ordeal, enough said.  The numbers of Covid 19 are once again rising so it will be interesting to see what all the new announcements will bring.  There have been no new cases reported here on the Island but we still have to abide by the rules that Scotland announce.

Saturday was spent in the kitchen preparing meals for the freezer and Sunday lunch, I like to have it all prepared so that I can listen to the Church service with no distractions.  It was in fact a live stream this week which was quite exciting.  We are allowed to go back to Church next week using a booking in system as only 50 are allowed in the building because of the 2 metre constraints.

Meatloaf with a thick tomato sauce was added and pork tenderloin prepared for Sunday lunch using the Hairy Bikers recipe, a firm favourite that I have made many times.

The stuffing was an apricot and ginger one and was very tasty.  It should be wrapped in streaky bacon but I didn't have any but it didn't detract from the taste.

Pickling vinegar was made using some pickling spice and boiling.  I must admit it did take awhile to get rid of the smell which was quite acrid and really did get the back of your throat but it was worth the effort.

I then went on to prepare some apples for the freezer and then made some tomato and apple chutney.  I had forgotten about some beetroot that I had planted up in one of the tyres.  I must admit, it wasn't a huge success but I boiled the 5 vibrant beets and then chopped them to make a pickle.  Nothing gets wasted.

There was a great walk which I will share in another post and there is always a little crafting.  A quiet but very fulfilling weekend.

As always I do thank you for your visit here.  A very warm welcome to new followers, I do hope you enjoy my little adventures through life.  Wherever you are in the World I do hope that you are safe and well, we are living in such strange times.  Take care.

See you soon.

  1. I do love to see a shelf of home made preserves. I'm currently fermenting lots of veggies. Toy isn't keen but I have found them to be very tasty.

  4. You are always so busy and your food always looks amazing!
My niece has been going through the same thing with colds & testing. She works in one school and her 6 year old attends another. The baby came down with what my niece was sure was croup - again - but of course he had to be tested before bring treated at the hospital. Then someone in the 6 year olds class came down with Covid so she had to be tested (apparently it took 5 people to hold her down) and then a co-worker came down with it and my niece had to be tested! They had to wait 4 hours but everyone got done and all came back negative - thank God. But it's so exhausting for everyone.
My church has been open for the past 4 weeks but we ask people to pre-register and keep the number allowed to 50 - even though we can seat nearly 1200! We've been doing an online pre-recorded service since lockdown and will continue with that for the foreseeable future. There is a meeting this week to decide if we will continue with in-person or just stick with online until the Spring. Everyone is adapting but it's a challenge.
I always look forward to the photos from your outings - the scenery is just so spectacular. Have a wonderful week.

  9. I hope all your grands will soon be able to go to school in a normal fashion. Our grands are only allowed virtual learning.
Never wasting food is an obsession to me, so I love hearing the same from you.

  11. My grand-daughter returned to class at college last week amid no end of C19 restrictions. She has classes from 8 to 2pm every day for one week and then the next week home tuition online. This is their way of reducing the number of students per class. She comes to us for lunch when she attends college so we have to take a lot of precautions. Really hope the youngsters can get back to a normal routine soon. Goodness you have been busy.It all looks so delicious. stay safe Amanda x

  18. I enjoyed catching up with you. I would love it if you'd share a photo of those cute grandkids in their school uniforms. They are so adorable. I am so impressed with how you use every thing with no waste. But I know your chickens would love anything you can't use.. like ours do. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  19. Everything looks and sounds delicious Lorraine. Our church is doing the same thing. Only 50 people so we've been watching it live-streamed for months now. We also watch Mandy's church and the church we were married in. We so grateful for everyone doing live streams.
I think many children are having a difficult time settling in this year. Nothing is normal and children thrive on regular schedules and what is expected at any time. When things change day to day it makes it so hard for them.
Our world is indeed in an uproar. I'm praying for peace and that people will come to know the Lord.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  22. Your husband should look like a Chinese buddha with a fat belly !! with all the delicious plates you prepare !
Here with this Corona circus people become more and more depressed and for the kids it's not nice either they had to wear masks in the beginning, but now not anymore, because it had been a stupid idea from an adult who had fortgotten that he had been a child too, the little once exchanged their masks because the one from the other classmate was nicer !! Imagine ! It's such an unreal life !

  24. We have strict protocols about students coming to school - no symptoms at all, and testing required for any fever/cough, etc. So far so good - only 9 cases on our Island and only 1 in the south region where we live. We are all being diligent about sanitizing and wearing masks.
I have pork tenderloin planned for tomorrow, but wasn't certain how I would cook it. I looked up the Hairy Bikers' recipe and it does sound good, so I think that will be the plan.
Our church is still only on line, and I'm looking forward to the day when we can meet again in the building, although it will be very different.
    Happy Autumn days to you.

  26. Sorry to read about Hector's start for the school year, perhaps you can share a photo of he and Honey in their school uniforms in a future post? Your home canning projects are always so impressive and delicious looking and that roast pork was wonderful looking and can imagine tasted even better than the photo looked.
