Stornoway Harbour

Time has been flying by which explains my absence.  We seem to have settled into a routine and live each day as it comes ticking each job off the list as it is completed.  The unpredictable weather dictating which jobs get done, inside or outside.  Our self isolation came to an end so we have had a few trips out and about ensuring that we are walking a little further each time in a bid to keep healthy.  Friday we had a drive into town to do some shopping and had our usual walk around the harbour.  It was a delight to be once again in Stornoway taking in the views.  The trees around the castle ablaze with colour letting us know that there is change in season.  The slight chill letting us know that there is a shift in the weather pattern.  Although not as busy as usual, maybe a lack of tourists (not sure) the harbour was still busy with boats enabling us to peruse and pick out a favourite.  There was also a fair few working vessels used for fishing to be seen.

The fisherman standing patiently by, watching over the proceedings always a joy to see.

The lifebuoy there as a reminder of how dangerous it is to be by the water.  A reassurance for those working here in the harbour.

A wonderful addition is a mural made onto the outside of a building, brightening up the square and adding to the ambience along with some trees with white lights and coloured bunting.

We had a wonderful stroll and called into the chip shop for a fish supper, our first since before lockdown.  It was a delight to sit on a bench and enjoy the simplicity of it.  It is suggested that you pre-order your meal and then you are given a time for collection to avoid queues.  We didn't but thankfully they were taking orders from passers by.

We did go onto  to look at the display at An Lanntair but I will share that on another post.  We also called into the supermarket to do a top up shop.  I was amazed how much some things have gone up, not least tinned fruit.  I do like some in my store cupboard for the Winter months but was surprised to see the increases which in some cases were quite substantial.  Have you noticed the rise in prices near you?

Hope all is well with you and that you are keeping safe.  This pandemic does not appear to be ending anytime soon we have all already adjusted to our new normal.  As the children start going back to school it will be interesting to see if there is any marked changes in the numbers.  There seems to be a mixed reaction to the changes around which Country you need to self isolate from, it is hard to keep up.   We have decided that no travels plans is the best way forward in the short term and we will look at again in the new year.   A very warm welcome to a new follower, I do hope you enjoy my little adventures through life.  A big thank you to all those who visit and leave a comment, it is a delight to know that you find something of interest.

See you soon.

  1. Oh, we do the picking a favourite boat thing too! And yes, food prices have gone up, massively so in some cases. My lactose free milk had jumped from £1 to £1.45 yesterday, scandalous.

  2. Same here re prices. Often 20-30p per item, more in some cases. It will I suspect, get far worse after December and the proper finish of Brexit.

  3. It’s lovely to spend time by a busy working harbour with all the hustle and bustle. X

  5. I love your harbor with the colorful boats and the old fisherman standing over. We have many boats in ours but they are white; only rarely does one appear with any color on it. I wonder why that is ....

  6. I'm glad you are able to get out and about now, it's so good for the soul. I'm worried about the numbers going up now that schools have reopened, especially as my husband is a teacher. The news reports all focus on the dangers to pupils but they seem to overlook the fact that the staff are adults and the risks are likely to be different. x

  7. It's really strange, the whole world seems to have the same confusions where to go where not to go, where do you have to wear a mask where not ! Everybody is bored and tired because each day is the same ! The only thing you can do is discover your own country and not travel !

  8. How pretty the harbour looks in the sunshine, you must be enjoying getting out and about again. I bet your fish supper tasted all the better for all those months without one. I haven't particularly noticed any price rises locally although it's taken me ages to be able to buy some slippers!

  9. I'm glad you're able to get out and about again, especially with so many beautiful places to enjoy on your doorstep. We've been placed on a watchlist here, the number of cases are on the increase, I'm just hoping that it can be contained before they impost lockdown restrictions on us again.

  10. Yes, things have been steadily creeping up in price all year. I have been preserving and building up our storecupboard, processing what I can get in season and reduced .
We miss our visits to Lewis..looking forward greatly to when we can return to stay with our friends in Tolsta

  11. My weekly totals at the grocery store are up about 40% ... but that is partly do to more impulse buying. Do watch for sale things and stock up.

  12. It sounds like you're doing very well with getting things done but also getting out to enjoy your favorite town and top off your stores. You should tell us which is your favorite boat! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  13. I love harbours as they are so interesting. Yes I've noticed prices going up quite a lot. Fish supper is a lovely treat.

  14. Lovely that you could get out for a nice walk and also have a fish and chip meal. Ordinary pleasures that are all the more special since the virus has disrupted everything.
I have definitely noticed an increase in grocery prices.

  15. You sound like you are handling all of the changes very well. I haven't bought canned fruit since last year, so I haven't noticed the change in price. I usually just buy what's on sale, and in bulk at Costco. Harvest time is coming up, which also helps in the fruit dept..

  16. When our kids were little, my husband worked at a shipyard and we'd drive down there to pick him up sometimes. Loved to see all the ships and boats there. Later we had a friend with a motor yacht (not one of the monsters) and we'd go down at putter around the marina.
It's miserably hot here 31C, and going to get warmer. The news is full of flex alerts to have people cut their power usages between 1500 and 2100, other wise there may be rolling blackouts. So far in our corner of Los Angeles County we haven't had any but you never know.
Stay warm and safe. I love your photos.

  17. Thank you so much for your beautiful pictures of the harbor. Prices have substantially increased for paper and most meat products. I don't go shopping as often anymore, so my food bills are quite substantial when I do. Hubby and I have only attempted takeout so far. We are not comfortable going to a restaurant either indoors or outdoors. School has started here, but I have thankfully been allowed to work from home at both my university position and my high school job. I will spend most of my days on Google and Zoom meetings with students and lecturing. It is not ideal, but it keeps me safe.

  18. The harbour is so lovely with those pretty skies and puffy white clouds. I'm so glad you were able to get out and top off your groceries and have a bite to eat. We've noticed our grocery bill is increasing each month here. Schools here are open, but only virtually. Trying times for us. Stay safe!

  19. It's good to be able to get out and about again. The harbour looks interesting every time to go there and share the scene. Glad you got some more shopping done and the fish and chips must have been tasty and a real treat. We're back to our routine of local daughter doing our bulk shopping which was recently being done by our other daughter who came to stay. We're in her
hands for getting food shopping which she drops off on a weekend when she's free to come by. She prefers to do our shopping as she worries about us being in contact with any infection and weekends are a chance for her to see us after her busy working week. I must say we're very grateful for the support. I can well imagine that food prices will rise for various reasons in the coming days. Take care, stay well.

  22. I am so thankful for you and your kind comments on my blog. Is there a way to follow your blog via email? That seems to be the only way I can keep up with new blog posts, so I was just wondering. I didn't see a place to subscribe by email. Just because my absentmindedness prevents me from keeping up with visits here doesn't mean I don't deeply appreciate your kind visits to my place. May the Lord bless you for the encouragement you are to me.

  23. It looks as though the two of you had a grand time getting out and about a bit. Even a fish dinner! How fun. We have gone through a couple of drive-thru's but have avoided going inside restaurants as a whole. Yesterday we finally had breakfast out with Larry & Nita who we have been with so much it's like our immediate family. The tables were almost 12 feet apart.
We want to travel to the UK so much to see Alex and Tara but it's still off limits to the US as far as I know. It will probably be spring before we can go now.
Take care my dear friend and tell Gerard hello for us.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  24. It was good to see the boats in the harbour. Phil was in the living room with me whilst I was reading your post. I showed him the photos as well! Glad you were able to go out and have some fun together. We just went out for a drive thru lunch at Carl's Jr after watching church on Youtube. I didn't feel like going into church this a.m. Had to un-reserve our spots Sat. Most likely going to Red Robin Monday as it's 15% off order as it's labor day weekend here in the USA. Close enough to walk to and back.I like their fish and chips, which is Alaskan Cod. Phil said "If you don't like cod, just come for the halibut!!!" :'> Have a blessed day and beyond!! Hugs and take care!! Becky x-----x

  25. Beautiful photos of the harbour. A fish dinner sounds like a lovely way to end your stroll.
Prices are going up here, too. I'm shocked at how much staples are costing.
I hope Gerard is feeling better these days.

  26. I'm glad you are out and about. We are gingerly going out (outside walking) I am still cautious about eating inside a restaurant so we have dined once outside and it was nice. Not sure how often we will do that!!

  27. So happy you are able to get out and about these days. I think you are smart to not travel anywhere. It is all so unpredictable with the virus. Stay safe.

  28. It's good to get out and about, and enjoy a fish & chip supper. My friend and I love our fish & chips when we go for our days out. Unfortunately we've only found one restaurant open, most of them are take away only, and when we're in a new place we don't know where to go to sit down. I haven't noticed price increases, I will take more notice next time. Stay safe.

  29. It's so good to get out and about.
Harbours are such a good place to be, there is always activity and lots to see. I enjoyed your photographs.

    All the best Jan

  30. Prices are definitely rising.

We have a small town here in Saskatchewan called Stornoway as well. No harbour there, though it is situated by a small creek, so it was wonderful to see the pictures of the place our small town was named after.

    God bless.

  31. Beautiful pictures!! Reminds me of my childhood, vacationing every year at the Jersey shore....Love the Fisherman statue too!! Thanks so much for stopping by and for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment! I was thrilled to get that huge project done and checked off my list!!
    Stay safe, healthy and happy!

  34. I can say and it is not a lie I have not had fish and chips in years!! Your fish&chips treat sounds delicious. It will be my firsat meal when I get back home to visit the family...which wont be until next spring now. I do so enjoying seeing where my blogfriends live....good photos of the harbour. For some reason I thought it would be smaller but perhaps my imagination is thinking of Alaska or somewhere similar.LOL! Prices have risen considerable here too....it annoys me. Keep well Amanda x

  36. Beautiful. With the amount of rain you get in your part of the world it is nice that the fisherman has a swanky raincoat.
