Iolaire Exhibition

We have had so many trips across the moor with hospital appointments that last week we decided to combine an appointment with leisure.  We drove up to the castle and had a stroll around the museum.  The bonus was we were also able to see the Iolaire exhibition as well.

I have mentioned this in an earlier post.  As it is coming up to its 100 year anniversary it is uppermost once again in peoples minds.  Most families were affected by loss either by the War or this Maritime disaster.

The Iolaire whose sinking on 1 January 1919 in the Minch was one of the worst maritime disasters in the United Kingdom waters during the 20th Century.  Of the 280 aboard only  79 survived yards from the shore.

So sad to survive World War 1 and then perish two months after its end.

We gave ourselves a treat and had a meal whilst we were out at the Castle, a beautiful venue.  The portions were a little large but very enjoyable.

The decluttering has begun in earnest with several blacks bags already for the Charity shop.  My wardrobe needed a good sort out and has been on the To Do list for some time.  It was a lovely feeling to be able to tick that job off, in the short term anyway.  I have still got the footwear to sort through but tomorrow is another day.

We were without electricity all morning, it was off all over the Island apparently which is unusual.  We were certainly thankful for the multi fuel stove.

Hope all is well with everyone and that you had a relaxing weekend.

See you soon.

  2. I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of the Iolaire disaster, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. Wonderful photos. Great idea to combine a hospital visit with some interesting leisure activities, plus a lovely meal. Hope the health stuff improves soon.

  3. How sad that those sailors lost their lives so close to being home again. The museum looks interesting and it is always good to have a treat or two around hospital visits:)

  5. I looked this up to read a little because I never heard of it. How very sad. Some of the women found their men washed up on shore the next day, can't imagine this.

I am doing the same going through stuff to take away as the living room gets painted, I kinda like not having much in there too.
Your meal looks so delicious! Mouth watering and especially that pizza, we love pizza here the most.

  9. What a devastating thing to happen to those families. Surviving the war only to perish so close to home. I can’t imagine the devastation those families must have felt. You have such interesting places that you visit Lorraine. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Your lunch looks delicious. I love bacon cheeseburgers and pizza. Maybe that’s why I need to lose weight! :-)
    Blessings always, Betsy

  11. Wise to have a fun outing, combined with a necessary appointment.

Such a tragedy!!!! How very, very horrible. -sigh-

A wonderful job of decluttering! Such a lovely feeling, to have something like this, accomplished. I am proud of you. :-)

Wonder what the cause of the island being without power was....? But you are covered. :-)

  13. Oh, that bacon burger looks divine. (So do the chips and salad.) What a sad event to have happen at sea. Getting on a ship always makes me a little nervous.

  14. So sad that the ship sank and so many lives lost.
I find decluttering hard but after I've done it I'm glad I did.
Your food pics make me hungry!!

  16. Thanks for sharing the history of the area around you with us which in this case leaves me appreciating life all the more. I'm glad you were able to enjoy some touring in the midst of your appointments, and that you have had some success in sorting your things...even if without electricity for awhile. Pending the closing of the sale of our house I made an offer on a little place in a 55 and older condo complex in a grassy well landscaped setting and my offer was accepted. Our house is going through various inspections and has passed so far for which we are thanking the Lord. xx

  18. Such a tragic event. So very cruel to have so many lives snatched so soon after the end of the war, it must have affected the families terribly. Your meal out looks delicious.

  20. An awful tragedy, especially poignant with the coming anniversary.
Lunch looks deliciously naughty, with enough of the green and salad things there to balance it. I'm glad you mentioned footwear, I have too many shoes which I know will never be worn again, definitely time to declutter them and send them on their way to a new home!

  21. Thanks for visiting me. It seems some time it hard for me to get around as I should. But I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the last few posts of your beautiful island, including the sheep and cliffs. Then making soap does look like great fun. The museum at the castle taught me something new that I didn't know, so sad. And the memorial remembrance with the poppies so touching. As a little girl we would wear poppies, but I don't see that remembrance anymore in my part of the world.

  22. This was such a tragic event which must have affected the whole island community. I remember it being featured on the television series 'Coast' which is always an interesting series to watch. I'm glad that you could incorporate a visit to the exhibition with your appointments. Decluttering sounds like something I should be doing. I need to clear some wardrobes before family visitors arrive during the Christmas period. I hope your medical assessment went well and you don't have too many disruptions with the electricity. Do you use an electric sewing machine? I expect when you can't do some sewing you have other projects on the go instead.

  23. How sad to survive a war and then just when peace arrives, to suffer that tragedy. That is a beautiful meal, but huge! I think it would easily feed two. Good on you for your decluttering. I think that will have to wait for after Christmas here.

  24. I recall reading about this unfortunate disaster when you did a previous post, Lorraine. But I did do another online look-up this year. We observed Veterans Day on Sunday by attending a downtown parade.
