Yarn Along

I have been so busy with my daughters wedding and preparing gifts for Christmas that I thought I hadn't done a lot of crochet so I surprised myself when I looked at the last photo how much I had done.  I am hoping to get on with the throw now that things have started to calm down.

I have just had my Simply Crochet magazine delivered, a subscription gift from my daughter.  We call it the gift that keeps on giving as I get a gift monthly.  I intend to put my feet up and browse through it this evening.  I also have  the delight of a new book, new to me anyway a purchase from the local car boot sale Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwaski.  The true story of Japan's foremost Geisha.  That should be an interesting read.

Yarn Along

I am on top of everything for the Wedding and for Christmas with the exception of a few bits I am unable to show on the blog as I have daughters who follow.  So finally  I am free to catch up with some reading and crochet for myself.  I have started to crochet a throw which I intend to surround the main colour block with granny squares to match the cushions previously made.  I am not putting any pressure on myself I intend just to do a couple of rows here and there in between other projects.

The lighting is not good so it isn't showing a true colour, there are some beautiful flecks going through the main colour which I intend to highlight in the granny squares.

I am currently reading A Different Kind of Love by Sheelagh Kelly.  I have only just started to read it but already is has captured my interest it surely seems to be what it claims a  gripping saga of love, loss and hope in wartime.

Yarn Along

I am still plodding along slowly with the cushions, they now need to be crocheted together.  I am quite pleased with the overall effect and the colours.  There is enough to give it some texture and warmth, ideal for the season.

I am still struggling with the same book About Grace, sheer determination rather than interest is sustaining me.  Not a book that I would recommend, but I will not give up now.

I am also browsing Christmas books which are giving me an enormous  amount of pleasure, making lots of lists for recipes to try and a variety of patterns on the to make list. 

All in all a very pleasant start to the month of October despite the change in weather, breezy and wet.  The stove is burning brightly with a stew simmering nicely on the top, what more could I want?

Yarn Along

I am still plodding along with the cushion cover, just doing a couple of rows each evening.  I didn't think I had done much until I looked at last weeks photo, I surprised myself.

 

I am still reading About Grace, very slowly a page here and there.  It is certainly not holding my interest enough that I can't put it down.  I am finding it quite hard going for some reason, which is quite surprising when you read the reviews.

 

I have also been browsing Christmas books for which I have been quite inspired.  I am doing really well with all my preparations, what about you?

Yarn Along

It is quite a dreary day here on the East Coast of England.  Overcast with occasional showers and the temperatures have dropped so it feels a lot cooler than it has of late.  It is lovely sat looking out over the field watching various birds and creatures come and go.  Unfortunately they are too quick for me as soon as I get the camera they have disappeared.

I love the thrill of a new project and a new book, so I am blessed this week I have both.  I have finished the granny squares for the cushion they need stitching/crocheting together and finishing off.  I have started another cushion using the yarn I managed to buy off a car boot sale at a bargain price.

I love the colours, I am just not a fan of acrylic but I do think it would be ideal for when the children are around as it washes so well.

I have just started to read About Grace by Anthony Doerr so I haven't formed an opinion yet.  The reviews are quite good so I am looking forward to putting my feet up and getting started.

 

Two new things, a new project and a new novel, that should keep me going for a couple of days.

Yarn Along

I gave up with the scarf using the ribbon yarn I really didn't like the feeling of it against my skin it was too harsh, so it will become bags for my 2 granddaughters.  In the meantime I have finally  used one of my vintage patterns to crochet a doily.  The colours I used are quite bright but I wanted it to have a bit of a modern twist so that it could be used when I do afternoon tea and not look old fashioned.

There are a few mistakes, that I didn't notice until I pinned it to be blocked.  Overall I was a little disappointed with the end result, its not as striking as I thought it was going to be.  I wanted a more vibrant effect.  Maybe I should do another one, this could be become quite addictive.  The one thing that seems to be going by the wayside at the moment is the reading, I tend to crochet to relax and can't manage to read and crochet I might give these audio books a try.  I am reading Voyage on the Great Titanic The Diary of Margaret Anne Brady, 1912 written by Ellen Emerson White.  It is slow going so I haven't formed an opinion yet

Yarn Along

This week I have finished another cushion to go alongside and compliment one I had made earlier finished with Cath Kidston buttons.  This time it was finished with crochet flowers and buttons.  It certainly makes for a very comfortable sit and contemplate chair.

 

I have also been busy with baby headbands which are such a quick make and a great way of using oddments.  I love how effective a few stitches can make something look, suddenly a pansy right before your eyes.

I have started a baby blanket in preparation for an Autumn baby as a gift.  A project that I can pick up and down in between other projects.  I have just started to read Kerosene by Chris Wooding recommended and loaned to me by a friend.  Not my usual style of reading but I will give it a go.

Yarn Along

This week I have been hooking cushions using chunky wool and a 7.00mm hook.  I finished one with Cath Kidston tiny rose buttons to coordinate with a throw I had made earlier in the year for a wicker chair in my craft room.  The second one is going to be quite plain and sit behind the pink, somewhere to sink into for sheer luxury.

 

I have just finished Just one more day A Memoir by Susan Lewis and have been browsing another gardening book.  This time Growing Food by Anna Pavord , a free gift with Grow Your Own Magazine, which was a subscription gift to my husband from one of our daughters.  A gift that keeps on giving in more ways than one.  I found the planting plans really quite useful and some of the recipes are a delight.  It is certainly a book than you can dip in and out of which is what I am doing.

Yarn Along

I have had some fun this week with crochet, a really simple twist to a very simple cotton dishcloth.  I have had some cotton yarn in my stash for awhile but wasn't really keen on the colour.  Dish/wash cloths do sell well at Fairs so I thought I would use the yarn to make some.  I put a border on some and finished with either a simple shell or picot edge.

A rubber band, some raffia and google eyes and I had the perfect spring prop.  A dishcloth bunny.

A fun make but a very useful one too...I managed to make 2 out of each 100g ball.  The colour has grown on me and I do need to replace a couple of mine so welcome to my kitchen.

 

I have been browsing through a whole load of gardening books to try and get a feel for what is suitable to grow in pots/containers as I do not want to lose any of the grassed area.  We seem to now have a plan.

A plan that doesn't compromise defined areas for the dogs or the area for the grandchildren when they visit.  We also don't want to lose the vintage cottage garden feel of the patio.  So we are going to add pots to the side of the house alongside the two raised beds.  We shall see....

 

I am also reading the heart breaking memoir of Susan Lewis, Just One More Day.  A deeply moving, tragic story of her mothers battle with breast cancer and the secrets around it leading to so many misunderstandings.  I have to keep putting it down because I find it unsettling, but it is a very deep moving true account that should be read.
