Another Day, Another Day Out

The weather held and we managed to pull all the rhubarb and more herbs which are now hanging in the kitchen to dry.  The rhubarb has been cooked ready for pie or crumble fillings and in the freezer.  Rhubarb and date chutney has also been made ready for the winter months.  Not a chutney that I have made before but worth a try.  I also cooked some beetroot and chopped it down along with some shallots and pickled them.

One cupboard is already full, we are now using a cupboard in the utility room.  I made a batch of mincemeat too as we enjoy mince pies all year round.  Still need to top up the oils and make some jam but tomorrow is another day.

Whilst away we spent a lovely day exploring Ampthill park which has three Trails to walk a short trail, heritage trail and a long trail.  It is on the site of one of King Henry VIII's favourite castles sadly it is buried underneath the ground but you can still enjoy the views from the top of the ridge.

We also had a wonderful day out to Herring Green Activity Farm and Bird of Prey Centre.  Bertie and Honey love a farm and both like their Grandad love a tractor.  It is certainly something we will need to start looking around for.  They are both so good with animals and never tire of looking and petting them.

The highlight of the day was a falcon display which we all enjoyed.  I had mixed feelings about some of these magnificent birds held captive but there as no doubt about it they were well looked after.

Bertie read all the signs to Honey and told her what each of the birds were and where they had come from.  The highlight of his day was to actually put the glove on and hold one.  The staff are wonderful, so kind and patient with the children answering all their questions.

Another job Bertie is considering for when he is a big boy.

We also took time for ourselves and enjoyed a stroll around one of the Antique Centres.  Sadly the park was been refurbished but the children still enjoyed the old water mill and we had lunch out for a treat there.

There is no doubt about it we crammed a lot into the time we had with our beloved Grandchildren, cherishing every moment we spent with them.  I hope you enjoyed this whistle stop tour of our time away.

As always I do thank you for your visit and for your comments.

See you soon.

  1. You are wonderful grandparents. Creating memories not only for you, but for them and for generations to come. Your grandchildren are blessed to have such caring, sharing, grandchildren. The pictures of them at the farm, remind me of our own boys doing the same things, many years ago now. What a joy, especially the ones on the tractor. Love it.

  4. Are these birds that were injured and have been rehabbed? Kept for captive breeding perhaps?

  7. It is preserve time of year, isn't it? I am trying to eat or cook all the apples on our tree... it is futile but the slugs and wasps are happy!

Lovely to spend so much fun time with your grandchildren. They'll be talking about these outings for a long while.

  10. This looks like a fun place for the children! I'm sure Bertie will remember holding that owl. How brave he is! I love birds, but would never get that close to a bird of prey.

  12. I did enjoy it! Bertie and Honey both look like sweet children and they are both so cute. Your canned goods look delicious. I opened a jar of pickled beets today...not homemade but store bought. :( They were pretty good though.

  15. Oh, those birds of prey are magnificent. I had a red tailed hawk in my birdbath once. He took up the whole space! I got to see an owl up close at our nature center. They are amazing. Thanks for sharing your fantastic photos.

  16. Good Evening Lorraine. It looks as though you are stocking your shelves nicely for the cold months ahead. I have never pre-cooked my rhubarb, just chopped it up and froze it in bags. Does pre-cooking it make it easier for crumbles, etc.?
What fun you had with Bertie and Honey. The falconry does look as though it was quite a hit as were the tractors.
We took Piper to church yesterday as it was Mandy's weekend to work at the clinic. She does 12 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday every other weekend.
Unfortunately, Piper began feeling unwell to her tummy right after we got home and even stayed home from school today. So far there hasn't been a lot of playtime with her. We're hoping that she will be absolutely fine when she wakes up tomorrow.
Tonight Dennis and I had dinner with all of my siblings and several of their children. Mandy and Brad stayed home with Piper and they were very missed, but the rest of us had a good time visiting.
I enjoyed catching up with more of your trip. Take care my friend.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  19. How lovely to have a cupboard full of homemade goodness ready for the Winter months. It all looks very tasty.
The antique centre looks very interesting. Andy and I will hopefully be going back to Dagfields in Cheshire in the next week or so as we saw something there that is on our son's wish list and if it's still there we will buy it for him for Christmas.
    Hugs-x-

  23. Your store cupboard is full, which is good to see. Those sessions in the kitchen preserving home grown produce is satisfying. You had a wonderful time with your grandchildren. Children enjoy the hands-on activities and learn a lot that way. It's a delight to see them develop interests that can be encouraged. I'm sure you're thinking of places to take them when you're next together or when they come to stay.

  24. Sounds like a perfect day! I too would struggle with the "captive" thing....we have so many varieties of the birds of prey on our farm and woods.

  25. It's SUCH a good idea to have mince pies all year round! My friend always begins making them in September, for her son's birthday, because they are his favourite. How amazing for Bertie to hold that barn owl, I don't suppose he'll ever forget it. x

Am so happy to testify about a great spell caster that helped me when all hope was lost for me to unite with my ex-girlfriend that I love so much. I had a girlfriend that love me so much but something terrible happen to our relationship one afternoon when her friend that was always trying to get to me was trying to force me to make love to her just because she was been jealous of her friend that i was dating and on the scene my girlfriend just walk in and she thought we had something special doing together, i tried to explain things to her that her friend always do this whenever she is not with me and i always refuse her but i never told her because i did not want the both of them to be enemies to each other but she never believed me. She broke up with me and I tried times without numbers to make her believe me but she never believed me until one day i heard about the DR.
