Take A Walk On The Westside

The sun didn't last long but at least the temperatures have remained so although not hot, we do not need the heating on.  Time has flown by this week, once again we could be heard wondering how we ever had time to go to work.  Our hobbies and jaunts out fill our days and we enjoy each others company immensely.  Today we had a drive out to the Westside of the Island and enjoyed a stroll around Arnol, where there is a blackhouse and Nature Reserve.

It looked a little overcast, there was a lot of low lying cloud but thankfully it stayed dry so we were able to enjoy our little tour.

The roof is a real delight to see, weighted down against the strong winds coming from the sea.

The blackhouse in ruins was a joy to see as it clearly showed how it had been built.  The layers and layers of rocks still in place so that each room could be visualised.

At the end of the one track road there was another hidden delight.  The RSPB nature reserve which we wanted to look at but it was a longer walk than anticipated so we had a short stroll and decided to return another day.

The meadow was a stunning sight, lush and awash with a multitude of wildflowers.

There were a multitude of species of birds that were just too quick for the camera, but it was a pleasure to see them darting from stem to stem.

The drystone walling is always a beautiful sight, we were left wondering how long it had been there and the families that had built it.  If only walls could talk...

See you soon.

  2. The white flowers look like what we call Queen Anne's Lace. They're weeds in Missouri, but planted on slopes in housing developments in California.

I love those walls, as well, and love seeing how walls vary in different parts of the world, depending on the materials at hand.

  3. I always wonder about walls, castles, and artifacts. What stories could they tell us about the lives of those who came before? When I was in France I had the most uncanny sense of deja vu...who knows, but I knew without a doubt that I had been there before.
Thanks for sharing your road trip and the lovely pictures.

  5. I had to go back as far as May 13 to catch up on your posts. Enjoyed every minute. You're truly a wonder. My grandmother would have loved learning some tricks from you, because she too liked to garden, cook, raise chickens. But you do all that and make a bazillion craft items as well. Do you ever sleep?

  6. Oh my! You live where the earth does really touch the sky, no wires, lights or disruptors. How beautiful. Wondering about the inhabitants of the black house. The majestic stones stacked one upon another, telling another story. I had to look up the Hebrides because I didn't know where it was, I thought perhaps Ireland. It is stunning.

  7. How wonderful to have such lovely places to take little jaunts out to!!! I wish we were so lucky. But places "to go see," are at a distance. And neither of us likes driving on big roads, anymore. In fact, he can't, with his now-eyesight.

But we do have our interests, to take up our time. And he is always amazed, that he has so much to do, retired. When he was worried about retiring.

But he is busier now, than he was running a drug store for all those years. But now, he can be busy, with projects he loves. Although he also loved life as a pharmacist and store owner.

Anyway, you are lucky about the jaunts, and I'm sure you appreciate it. :-)

  8. The blackhouse is so interesting! I must admit to having a love affair with the beautiful dry stacked walls you have featured. I wonder the same thing you do--if only they could speak. Beautiful post, my friend of your lovely island.

  9. That is so cool that you have access to walk on the stones of history like that. I wonder if anyone has written a book of how they think families lived back then. I'm glad it's warmer for you.
    ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  16. You're spoilt for choice with all the lovely places for trips out on the island. Such a lot of history and so much to learn from it, I often wonder about times gone by, who's lived in a place and who's walked the same paths as we're walking now.

  20. Happy Saturday Lorraine. It's wonderful to see another beautiful tour of your island. I was also glad to see Gerard out and able to enjoy it too. That roof is really amazing and the Blackhouse ruins too. I think my favorite photos are of the sheep. I adore sheep. That fleece hanging from the bramble has my fingers itching to pluck it off and wash and spin it! Thank you for the beautiful sights and history.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  26. All that rock work makes me think of the backs of the builders and how sore they must have been by the time all those walls were accomplished. Isn’t it incredible they’re still standing after all the weather they withstand? Your island life is so beautiful!

  32. I had never heard of a 'blackhouse' before. Thank you for showing me something new. I do like to see the indigenous language being used in the signs. I wish my country would use our indigenous languages more often.

  33. A GREAT SPELL CASTER (DR. EMU) THAT HELP ME BRING BACK MY EX GIRLFRIEND.
Am so happy to testify about a great spell caster that helped me when all hope was lost for me to unite with my ex-girlfriend that I love so much. I had a girlfriend that love me so much but something terrible happen to our relationship one afternoon when her friend that was always trying to get to me was trying to force me to make love to her just because she was been jealous of her friend that i was dating and on the scene my girlfriend just walk in and she thought we had something special doing together, i tried to explain things to her that her friend always do this whenever she is not with me and i always refuse her but i never told her because i did not want the both of them to be enemies to each other but she never believed me. She broke up with me and I tried times without numbers to make her believe me but she never believed me until one day i heard about the DR. EMU and I emailed him and he replied to me so kindly and helped me get back my lovely relationship that was already gone for two months.
