First stop Stornoway for a stroll around the harbour and some shopping. Then onto Cameron's our favourite chip shop for a hearty lunch.
A stroll back to the car and off we went again this time back across the moor to the Barvas and Brue Community Centre, where the 37th Westside Agricultural Show was been held.
As we entered the hall it was buzzing not only with people but with so many amazing exhibits from flowers, vegetables and eggs to craft work and so much in between. How I wished I had looked into this marvellous event prior to yesterday I would have entered some of the categories. Let me take you on a little tour around the hall.
The Fashion and Textiles (wool) section was one of my favourites there was some talented knitters and so many sections from socks, bonnet, adult Aran sweater, matinee set to shawl or child's sweater.
The baked goods were a delight to see and once again so many sections to enter. Our little friend wanted to taste them, her theory been 'how did you know which was the best if you can't taste them' never a truer word said. The sweet craving satisfied when we went for afternoon tea later in the day.
There were many sections in the Horticulture remit best worked croft, best vegetable plot, best garden and best polycrub, polytunnel or greenhouse. Maybe something to work towards for next year. There was also a variety of sections within the flowers and vegetable which seemed popular with entrants.
There were many other sections which included artwork and photography but there were too many people around to get photos. There are some very talented people on this Island, the standards were high.
Outside there were many tents hosting a variety of stalls which were fun to walk around. I must admit it became more of a social event as we chatted our way around, what a joy it is when you know so many people and have been accepted as part of the community. Our little friend enjoyed the clown and was a great admirer of his skills with a balloon and juggling bags.
The animals were a delight with numerous breeds and categories for both sheep and cattle. Not forgetting poultry hen, cockerel duck or drake.
A great but tiring adventure. I do hope you enjoyed a glimpse into our day as three go adventuring.
See you soon.
What a fabulous day out. I do love an agricultural show and this one look to be very well attended with some wonderful exhibits too. I'm definitely with your little friend, I'd want to taste the baked goodies too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great day out. Next year you'll be there again, I have no doubt, maybe collecting a few firsts?

ReplyDeleteWhat a great day! I’m sure that your friend enjoyed getting out for the day and I am sure that her mom appreciated the time to rest. Hope that she is feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful adventure☺

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful adventure!
ReplyDeleteAnd a wonderful day out, for your little friend!
It is delightful to see her smiling and having fun, after a while. Oh yes.
With her mom not well, I'm sure she really needed this break. And you were sweet, to give it to her.
✨✨✨✨
I think your little friend may want to adopt you after such a lovely day. Hope her Mum is fine now.
ReplyDeleteOh, that looks like to much fun. The knitting looks wonderful. I love all of the animals, too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great time was had by all.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I do love an old fashioned agricultural fair. We used to have just such but now entries have dwindled and young people want more exciting things so it has changed to carnival rides and demolition derbies and such. Oh well, I'm glad you had a good time and so did your sweet neighbour.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to visit the fair, how interesting with so much to see. Bless you for helping out and letting your neighbor have a bit of a rest day.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a lovely day at the fair! So nice for you and your husband to share the day with your friend. I'm sure her mother appreciated your kindness.
ReplyDeleteOh what a wonderful time you must have had. It looks very, very similar to our county fairs here in the U.S. I love the fair and all of the exhibits, but my favorite is always the needlework. The needlework talent was lovely at your show and I understand why your friend wanted to taste those sweets. They all look wonderful. How could the judges ever choose a winner?
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you took your neighbor with you. You can see the delight in her face and I know it warmed yours and Gerard's hearts too.
Next year I'm sure you will enter some of your lovely makes and take home lots of ribbons. There is always so much to see and do at the fair and I thank you for sharing yours with all of us. Across the ocean, things are still so similar. We have more things in common than differences. I wish more could see that.
Wishing you a wonderful Sunday Lorraine.
Blessings and love,
Betsy

ReplyDeleteSeeing this makes me want to have fish and chips for breakfast! Great day out you all had.
ReplyDeleteI love going to agricultural events, especially when they have animals to see!! So many great displays there for you to look at and take in. What a lovely day you had to enjoy your adventures! xo
ReplyDeleteI would like to go there! The baked food, horticulture, the animals, the clowns, all the pictures are wonderful! Thanks for sharing !
ReplyDeleteCheers, Sandra

I'll have a piece of each of the pies and desserts please! Looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteThat was certainly a very nice day of adventuring to share with your young neighbor. She really seemed to be having a grand time. Meanwhile, all those baked treats would have made me hungry for samples.
ReplyDeleteLot of adventure packed into one day. I would be so tired too. I must say the baked goods looked so good! I love events with the grandchildren such as this.
ReplyDeleteAlways lovely for adults to see the world through younger eyes and for young people to have friendships with older generations. The juggling bags seem like a great idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun-packed day the three of you must have had! I really think you could have done well in several of the sections. Next year's event is one to remember, for sure!
ReplyDeleteAn interesting outing for the 3 of you and I am sure the happiest will be the youngest. I am sure her mom really appreciated you giving her a break to rest and keeping her daughter occupied with a wonderful outing.
ReplyDeleteseems you had great time, interesting outing.

Wow.. what a huge fair.. and so many wonderful things on show! I hope you enter many of your wonderful things next time. Thank you for your kind comment on the loss of my sister.. her funeral is on Saturday and I'm stressing about it. ((hugs)), Teresa
ReplyDeleteWe have a similar fair here on Long Island in September. Now you know that you can enter some things next year. How nice that you took your young neighbor out for a fun day.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you had a fun day out with your little friend and hope I that her Mum is a lot better now. You should enter some of your crafting items next year. Lots of talented folk in your part of the island community and you are now one of them. It must have been interesting to see the farming world and animals on show at the event too.
ReplyDeleteI love events like this and never miss one if it takes place here around or around Brussels. There are so many things to look at and sometimes I find a real bargain. Was certainly a lot of fun for you !
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely post.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy all of your photographs showing this brilliant event.
All the best Jan
