Charity Shop Treasure

Gerard celebrated his birthday yesterday, not the celebration that we had planned but a fun day.  We had a picnic brunch overlooking the sea and enjoying the tranquil surroundings.  There was so much to look at, so many different species of birds and not a workable camera in sight.  Sadly the batteries had run out, it didn't detract from our enjoyment.

We had a few jobs to do in and around Stornoway.  Gerard went onto the Sports Centre for the rehabilitation course whilst I had a wander around the charity shops.  It was nice to browse the many books and patterns, a great favourite of mine.  One mans rubbish is another mans treasure so I was delighted when I came across a book for crochet borders.  A quick glance through sparked off all sorts of projects in my mind.

I came across a pattern for socks, a pattern that will probably never get used but I felt it would be a wonderful addition to my collection.

Midges will be prolific here on the Island shortly so this next find made me smile.  A book that may give us some tips on how best to deal with them.

As Bertie and Honey will be visiting next week I thought it prudent to have a rainy day project ready.  These seemed to fit the bill...

...I like to think that they were unused due to the wonderful weather.

I was thrilled to come across this Winter Warmers pattern book, the 9 patterns are a delight.  I have already got the wool together to crochet the shawl.

Have you found any treasure lately?

All in all despite the altered plans, a wonderful celebration.  We enjoyed coffee and cake before returning home for a relaxing evening together.

See you soon.

  1. Happy Birthday to Gerard. I hope he is getting stronger every day. The picnic sounds lovely. Your charity shop finds look great, particularly the crochet border book. I imagine the midges might be ok on the islands, with the strong prevailing winds? I hope so for your sanity, the itch of a hundred midge bites is quite something. Keeping my fingers crossed. x

  2. If ever you find out how to sort out midges that would be a wonderful post. The books look great - should keep you busy for a while (as if you needed help with that).

  3. Happy Birthday to Gerard! A camping-and-climbing friend of mine recommends mosquito coils to deal with midges while another friend puts citronella oil in her daily bath. Your charity shop finds are treasure indeed - and your comment about "wonderful weather" made me smile. x

What wonderful treasures you have found. The midges book made me chuckle. I do hope you're not too plagued by them in the coming months.

  8. Happy birthday to Gerard! That sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day. I think it's midges that we get up north in Michigan. They are horrible! Swarms of the darn things. Shudder.

  22. You two know how to honor a day and are very good at turning something around. I no longer wander in second hand shops for fear of bringing something home. I must go into major decluttering mode as soon as I get the energy, perhaps before.

  28. Happy belated birthday to Gerard and prayers for his health. Nice finds in the thrift shop. Didn't find much on my trip to Spokane as i'd hoped. But I did get a few items at Kitchen Collection at outlet mall. One item on I wanted was $5....silicone ends on tongs, for use for instant pot...lifting things out, instead of my hands and getting burned...then measuring cups and spoons...the sets...$5 and two other items....in pkgs...$2 each pkg. Things I can use. Have a blessed week. Now I need to go out on a walk since it's so nice outside! Hugs!
