A Little Adventure

Another beautiful day here on the Isle of Lewis and consequently a little adventure out to explore a little more of its beauty and history.

A monument to commemorate the loss of the Iolaire where 205 souls perished within yards of land.  A true tragedy of predominately naval ratings returning to Lewis and Harris in the Great War.

Sadly only 79 survived.  It was heart breaking to see how near to land this tragedy occurred and how fragile vessels are when a storm hits these exposed Islands.

The loss of so many had a devastating effect on the Islanders and was in part the start of the decline of the population in between the wars.

At An Lanntair there is the Hebridean Book Festival going on with Films, workshops and exhibitions.  Such a lot going on when you consider the size of the Island.

A lovely place to sit and relax over a pot of tea and cake overlooking the harbour and make  plans for the future.  A wonderful little adventure around the Island once again highlighting its amazing history.

Another stocking is finished, it takes as long to sew in the ends and sew it together as it does to crochet the squares.

Not cool enough to light the fire, although a little overcast the temperatures are still quite high for this time of year.

The dappled sunlight making the photo a little hazy and reflecting off the mirror above.  I am hoping if I leave them there long enough Santa will take pity on me and fill them up.  In truth I have everything I want and need already and feel blessed that we are living the dream.  Wishing you and yours a wonderful weekend.  We have no real plans and intend to take things easy prior to our departure next week.

See you soon.

  1. The stockings are wonderful and I do hope Santa fills them to the brim with lovely little things. So tragic about the shipwreck. I can imagine that the storms can be very fierce there in the winter. The book fair looks wonderful - I love reading local history. It does give one a sense of connection like no other. You must be so excited about your trip to visit family and friends and on to Florida. So glad that the hurricanes are over! Wishing you safe travels. xx Karen

  2. Your stockings are beautiful. It does take some time to sew in all of those ends doesn’t it? Reading about the shipwreck was so sad. What a tragic thing to have happened. There always seems to be so much happening on your little island. I’m so happy for you.
    Blessings always, Betsy

  4. Living on an island or near the coast makes you more aware of how scary a shipwreck is. So many people didn't know how to swim.
The stockings look so good hanging there.

  6. It really is amazing that your island has so many choices for people to take part in.
You've put a lot of work into those cute stockings!

  7. Ship wreaks were sadly a part of the history of the coastal community I lived in in CA as well. Even though the community is rather isolated, I was impressed by the local talent and industry like you are finding on your beautiful island. So glad your are enjoying your new home :) xx

  8. Wondering if crocheting a stitch around the outer edge would go quicker? Kind of like a serger edging? I'm not much good at crocheting so just trying to problem solve. Hoping your trip is smooth sailing with no troubles to buffer you. Will look forward to hearing of all your adventures while you're away.

  9. What a tragedy, so many lives lost, very sad indeed. You're right, there always seems to be something happening on that little island of yours. Love the stockings, I'm sure Santa won't hesitate to fill them, but you'll have to wait until Christmas.

  17. I'm so jealous of where you live. It is SO beautiful.

I think sometimes people forget just how wild the seas and lakes can get. When I talk about The Great Lakes, because there aren't tides, people imagine they are really calm, but they can be quite deadly. Lake Superior has many shipwrecks, some left where they were.

    The stockings are really pretty!

  19. You DO have a lot going on - a little change from watching that wonderful sea, or is it ocean? I must look you up. Aha! Ocean. Now I have a better picture in my head when I read your posts.

Love your stocking colors, but understand the time involved in connecting and tucking. I try to avoid it. No patience.

  21. A tragic story indeed. The water can turn in an instant. Horrible to lose lives like this. I do like your stove with the window. I would love one like this where I can see the logs burn and feel the warmth, so cozy. Fine stockings and you have the patience for sure to do such fine work.
    Happy Monday Betsy

  23. I can imagine that the loss of so many young men would have had a tremendous impact upon the island. Such tragedy.
Glad you can enjoy and relax during this last week before you leave. The stockings are wonderful.

  24. Sad story of loss of life near your island. The sea is mighty dangerous. So many shipwrecks off Oregon's coast, especially near the Columbia river. Your fireplace looks cozy with your crocheted stockings hung with care. Enjoy your time away and blessings to you!

  25. You do indeed have a varied history on your island, Lorraine, and thank you for sharing it, even such a tragedy. Yes, it does seem you have quite a few local events and activities which is wonderful in a small community.

  27. When I see the waves around this island than even a big ship would get in difficulties. It's all so rough and wild.
