'Au Naturel'

For years I have dyed my hair, and presumed that I would be a silver fox underneath the colour.  I did start to go grey in my mid twenties, all the more noticeable due to my dark natural colour.  Inspired by Deborah over at The Beautiful Matters who has already taken this journey and grown out the colour, I have decided to go 'au naturel'.  First step was to get a very short hair cut and then just go with the flow and let the colour grow out.  It is not an easy journey, my hair looks a mess most of the time and the weather has been mild so hats have not been necessary.  The plan was to grow out the colour in the Winter months so that when I went out I could wear a hat.  I have been tempted a few times just to go and get some more colour put on, but I have come this far and will persevere until all the dye has been cut out and then I will make a decision.

Not a good look, as I have not done my hair yet but the picture does show how far I have come.  I think it is fair to say that it will become more of a salt and pepper look rather than the silver fox that I had envisaged.

I will let you know of my progress.

See you soon.

  2. I think natural will be beautiful, and probably a lot less trouble for you. My sister recently did the same thing and her gray is pretty.

  3. Good for you! With your short cut your salt and pepper style will be a reality in no time, I can see the colour is only just in the tips now. I am not quite ready yet. I also have very dark hair that shows all the whites. x

  4. Ooooh I don't think I would be brave enough to go au naturel. I think mine would be white like my grandmas and it wouldn't be a good look on me....lol.
Yours looks like it will be lovely.

  7. I am almost a silver fox now! I too started by cutting my hair cut short and neat. Many tried to discourage me but I persevered. Surprisingly, those who have discouraged me are now encouraging me to keep the silver!

  8. Well done you! I keep thinking of doing the same until my kids start saying that I have a ruler in the middle of my head. They're not nice :) Keep at it. A friend in work did this and now she looks fabulous!

  10. Hang in there!! It seems to take so long, but you'll get there. Whatever your natural color is underneath it will be more flattering to your skin tone than the dye. If you really don't like it, you can add some highlights, rather than do a whole head of color. At least that's what I told myself when I was doing this. I have about an inch of blonde on the tips of my bangs that nobody notices except me. It looks so fake to me now, next to the natural. A couple more cuts and it will be gone.
I had a man come up to me in church yesterday, out of the blue, and tell me how beautiful my hair was!!
You can do it!! xo Deborah
    ps thanks for the mention

  12. It looks like your natural colour is lovely, no need to dye it. I used to have flashes in my teens, when they were fashionable, but have never had any colour in my hair since then. I've got a few strands of grey coming through now but they're not very noticeable. My mum's never dyed her hair in her life and at 82 is only just starting to go grey.

  13. I decided a few years ago to stop dying my hair. I'm getting used to greyness. Hair is softer now. People, especially older male customers at hardware store tend to comment on it. Once it's changed it's better. Still grappling with the getting this stage of lide already!!

  14. Going back to your natural hair colour will take time, but it'll be worth it and you can then relax. I don't do much to my hair except a trim every six weeks. My hair hasn't gone grey so far, but I've family genes to thank for that.

  15. the back is the last to go white any way, or in my family it is.

  16. You have to go au natural at some point and I am sure you will be happy once the colour has all grown out. It is surprising how long it takes isn't it. xx

  17. I too have done this, it took a long time to get the grey through, just before Christmas, I did get a few highlights around my face, and hopefully it will blend the regrowth a bit better. I am only 45, but whenever i put a colour in, I have noticeable regrowth within a week. Time to embrace my natural silver wisdom highlights I think.

  19. I finally went totally natural a couple years ago. I've actually gotten compliments on it. I dyed it again last summer because I felt it looked blah and boring but never got a single compliment. In fact, I got the opposite....comments on how it looked so good the other way. So, I grew it out again. Short hair works pretty well to grow it out quickly. ;-) It certainly is easier and probably healthier. You're almost there! Hang in there! It'll be worth it and fun for you to try something new. You might actually love it! :-)

  20. I think you'll like being natural - I never dyed my hair until I went through a mid-life crisis at age 50 and dyed mine a reddish purple and hated the upkeep of keeping it dyed. So, I grew it out and the compliments started in. Now I love my "silver" hair. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Seriously I think you will look great anyway!

  23. Good on you!!! Let us know how it goes. I haven't started to dye my grey as I don't know what I would do when I didn't want to dye it any more, so I will be interested to know what you think and how you get on with the decision to stop. xx

  24. Hope that you will love it! Deborah's hair looks terrific and yours will, too. My hair is quite streaked with gray. I would prefer the salt and pepper.

I, too, love Winston Churchill speeches. That man had a way with words and used them powerfully.

  25. I am salt and pepper, rather than just white, and I have to keep dying it as it looks awful.

  27. Hang on in there. I decided to do exactly the same thing a year ago. I had lived with a bob for as long as I can remember. I had it cut really short (too short really as I really didn't like it at all) In March I caved in and bought a wash in wash out dye... it didn't and I looked really odd. I have been dye free since then and really like the new 'naturel me'. It has saved me a fortune on dye too.

  28. I've thought of going au naturel (hair colour wise anyway lol), just not sure I'm ready yet! It's a brave decision, of course not irreversible, but I think as it takes a while to know what it will really look like, that's what makes it hard. I'm a very impatient person, I would find the waiting really hard I think. Your hair is looking fab already, you can see the colour is only at the ends now so it won't take too much longer:) I love the style though, bet it's easy to look after :)

  29. Sweet friend, you will look lovely no matter what {{smiles}} I must say that I was encouraged by your words of going grey in your mid-twenties simply because I am 29 and have quite a bit of grey hair spread throughout my dark brown. It's all I can do not to dye it, but so far I am just letting nature takes its course :)

I look forward to your journey and applaud you for taking this step. Hugs!

  30. Good luck, you are brave. I've been thinking about growing mine out for ages but like you, instead of the elegant silver fox I would like, I suspect it will be the horrid salt and pepper :-(

  32. Bravo to you! I think you will be thrilled, your hair is going to be so beautiful. I love Cindy Joseph and her thoughts on aging and going gray. I stopped coloring my hair over 3 years ago, I have big gray streaks and I love them. It saves money and a lot of time.
    Good luck,
    Meredith

  35. I still get my hair dyed but my sister let hers go au naturel. It took about 2 years for all the dye to grow out as she didn't want to get it cut very short. I think mine would be salt and pepper if I let it grow out.

  36. I did the same thing a few years ago I got a very short hair cut and in 6 weeks I was all grey not a silver fox which I want also
back of my head is a dark gray and around my face it's silver
I was tired of the $80 hair color every 6 weeks
