Summer Crafting

Good Morning, another week has flown by I am seriously wondering where the time goes?   The weather has not been anywhere near the same as the mainland with lower temperatures and some days rain, like today.  Saturday saw quite a lot of wind which has damaged quite a few plants.  Island living...I wouldn't change it.

The chickens had a little adventure this week and escaped from the garden, they were found walking down the road.  Fences have since been repaired and they are back in a pen safe!  We are blessed with good size brown eggs daily but I thought I would share this particularly large egg from late last week.  I don't think I have ever seen one so large.

I have made time to craft this week as a friend from Church wanted me to make a brooch/corsage to match a dress.  I actually had fun making three so that she could choose which one she favoured.  Two crochet ones which were a very quick make and a Harris Tweed one.

The craft room has had a good sort out and some areas rearranged, making it easier to find and indeed get to materials needed for a project.  Storage is a lot better and much more effective.  During the clearout I did come across a project languishing in a basket which I have retrieved and am now working on.  It is a picnic throw that I started several years ago and for some reason never finished.  It is so bright and cheerful and perfect for a gift for my grand daughter who we have a tepee ready to take when we visit.  I am hoping to either sew her name into the tepee or paint her name on it using fabric paint.  I am hoping to start it later today, when I return from aerobics.

We intend to spend a few hours this afternoon working in the garden room, this area has been such an asset to us and enables us to grow a little food for ourselves.  The winds here are not conducive to growing some things outside.  We are enjoying strawberries, which for me are a beautiful taste of Summer.  I made a trifle yesterday out of about 6, such a luscious   Sunday treat.

As always I do thank you for your visit and your uplifting comments.  Cherie asked if I was a shawl person.  Yes I am, they are a comfort item for the climate we live.  Crafty in the med asked about the yarn used for the shawl. it was Paintbox Yarns simply DK.  Grandmadbeckyl asked about Debenhams, sadly the whole chain has closed the store will certainly be missed by me.  Mrs Tiggywinkle asked about Church, yes I am thankful that we are back in Church and are now allowed to sing but still have to wear masks and sit 2 metres apart.  Apparently from next week it is 1 metre apart.  Hope this helps.

I am also busy making lists as we intend to visit family and help with childcare during the Summer holidays.  We have had quite the issue booking ferries as they are all fully booked as so many people are having staycations and the Islands are a beautiful place to visit.  Tourism is indeed a great source of income for the Island so is certainly welcomed.  However, the added number of visitors is making it very difficult for Islanders to travel particularly with the reduced numbers allowed on board.  We are thankful that we have finally been able to get ferry bookings so we can now visit family.  I am also thankful for such good neighbours who will look after the cottage and chickens whilst we are away.

See you soon.

  2. So glad you were able to get ferry bookings. I am sure you will enjoy your visit to the mainland. That extra large egg is quite amazing. Loved seeing those different brooches. They are all very pretty. Enjoy your quilting. I am sure your granddaughter will love that as a picnic blanket.

  3. My goodness! That egg is huge! How fun to see it. The brooches are all lovely and I'm sure your friend will enjoy getting to choose just which one to wear.
I love the colors in the picnic blanket. I just know it will be loved and cherished as Honey grows up. (Is it for Honey?)
I have no garden this year but hope to plant a few things next year. Zuchini, tomato, green beans and cucumber would be nice. We'll see how much gets done this year!
I'm glad you're getting ferry bookings. Does that mean we'll see each other? I certainly hope so.
Take care my dear friend and love to Gerard.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  5. It's always lovely hearing about your days. Your chickens wished to be free range and took matters into their own. So glad you were able to retrieve them without harm. And those eggs are enormous!

  8. So funny that your chickens went walk-about. Good thing you were able to get them back (hopefully with not too much trouble. That one egg is huge. I'm sure the poor hen had to make a big effort to get it out.
Nice that you could finally get your ferry booking and can make plans. Take care.

  9. That egg is quite big. Triple egg yolks? Glad the chickens were found and brought back home and now safe again. Nice quilt and I'm sure your granddaughter will like it. Nice flowers you made as well. I went online to Debenhams website and that is open. I looked at some dresses and they were so pretty! Almost wanted to buy one but it's all in pounds not dollars. One of these days I am going to make a skirt with a pattern I have in a drawer. Dark grey or black with lace on it. That way I can wear different shirts/blouses with it. I've yet to find one that's already made that fits me. I am thankful you are able attend church again! Praise God! Have a good week!==Becky

  15. I bet that was a double yolker!

What pretty brooches you made. I am sewing curtains but hope to get on with a craft project soon.

You would think that some priority might be given to islanders when it comes to ferry bookings. I am glad you finally got bookings.

  21. I'm glad your chickens are safely home again. That's one BIG egg! Your brooches are lovely, especially the Harris Tweed one.
Church is starting here again, although we haven't been yet. No masks and we can sing. I wonder what will happen.

  22. All three of the corsages are wonderful, but surely she chose the lovely Harris Tweed because it is so representative of the island. I love your organization in the craft room; something I certainly need to work on here. I hope you have a wonderful vacation or staycation with the family. Take care!

  24. That is quite a large egg! I wonder if there are two yolks inside? Your brooches are so lovely. I am sure she had trouble picking out a favorite. It is good that tourism is picking up and that you were able to still book a ferry.

  28. A giant egg - it remains to be seen whether you will get it more often from one of your chickens.
    You made beautiful brooches.
Have fun with your family, how lucky you have received ferry tickets. Many greetings to you.

  29. That large egg looks about the size of a ducks egg! Are you sure you haven’t an intruder there in your hen coop? Perhaps your hens brought a visitor back with them from their jaunt. That picnic quilt is gorgeous your grand-daughter is going to love it. Thank you for the yarn details. I have checked it out online and see there are generous discounts at the moment. Have a wonderful time with your family. Keep well Amanda x

  30. Who got to eat the extra large egg, that's what I want to know, haha. Glad you managed to book the ferry crossings, happy times with family are on their way.

  31. I am smiling at the thought of your chickens going off on their own little adventure. What a huge egg - was it a double yolker? I'm glad you've been able to book onto the ferries, no doubt your family will be itching to see you again. Thanks for the church update, I'm intrigued by the different approaches taken by different churches. The Church of England is allowing the chalice to be shared again (although I don't know of any church which is actually doing that) - I think it's bonkers. x

  32. As usual you have done wonderful creative things ! I love the little flower with the pearl inside. The weather here is quite cool and we had a real disaster with floods ! Lots of people lost everything ! My husband is much better since he is in this beautiful home and in 4 days has learned a lot and became social again ! He is the rooster amongst hens, lol !
