Weekend

A quiet weekend, where we continue to enjoy a jigsaw that seems to be never ending.  It remains on the dining table and as we pass it do a few pieces here and there.  We have a new book of crosswords that we are also enjoying.  Crafting still remains a major part of my day, this time cards.  I have made a few for the card box which I can add the sentiment to if I need a card in a rush.

The snippets of card/paper stock not wasted I went on to make some fridge magnets for the 'doorstep blessings'.

Sunday, I walked down to the outbuilding to refill the peat bucket and check on the chickens.  It was bitterly cold and the ground solid as it had frozen overnight.  As I looked around it was quite amazing that not a soul could be seen.  There was the odd rustling as a sheep moved through the longer grass that was not frozen and a sigh from the wind hitting a rugged fence or building.  It was a joy to be outside and enjoy the deafening silence and the stunning beauty. You could see the wisps of smoke coming from the chimneys  and the smell of burning peat permeating around the village. I may be in lockdown but I can still enjoy the never ending beauty that surrounds me.

I set up a cosy corner for us to enjoy afternoon tea together, using the roses that Gerard had bought for me as a focal point.  It was nice to reminisce about some of the places we have had afternoon tea and compare some of the amazing treats we have eaten over the years.  This I must admit was a lot of leftovers but we enjoyed it none the less.

There was sausage rolls and mincepies from the freezer, leftovers from Christmas.  There was also a small plate of sandwiches using the pork leftover from Sunday lunch.  Along with coleslaw leftover from our Saturday meal.  No scones but a sweet treat of mandarin trifle which I must admit was very tasty.  A pot of tea was also added.  A little extravagent but it felt quite decadent and indeed the treat that it was meant to be.  Are you adding little treats to your day?

I thank all those that left comments and well wishes on my last post, it was greatly appreciated.  Take acre and stay safe wherever you are in the World.

See you soon.

  2. I am intrigued by the mention of PEAT. I have read about this only in books! Fascinating, to someone brought up in the tropics and then the desert. Peat fires! Your tea looked lovely. That's something else that is fascinating; tea!

  3. How lovely to enjoy afternoon tea together, it's the little things which are big treats at the moment. I can just imagine the silence and stillness around your little cottage and it takes me back to days gone by.

  5. Yes there is always beauty to be found if we look for it. Your tea looks delicious. I treated us to home made carrot cake from a new recipe and it was the best I have made. Little things make us happy.

  6. What a lovely tea. You found a way to make your food special for you and Gerard and I think that's lovely. I have never had a "real" tea and Tara is looking forward to taking me for a nice tea when we visit. She is one of the few in our family that understands my love for hot tea.
Wishing you both a lovely day and I pray that you'll stay safe and well.

  7. Delightful afternoon tea, for the two of you. I have a friend who makes the most beautiful cards and always shares some with me. It's lovely to have a card to come at when you need it and made with love.

  8. Your cards are lovely. I enjoy making cards too. I loved your afternoon tea. Since we retired we have gotten into the habit of having tea or coffee or hot chocolate and a little sweet treat in the afternoon. In warmer weather we often have something cold to drink with our snack and we sit on the porch or under the maple tree in the backyard. I've not gotten as fancy as you did but it is a lovely idea that I need to do once in a while! Have a great week.

  9. I love how you've arranged little treats on your tiered tray. It looks so elegant. Years ago we had afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria. This reminded me of that lovely tea we had that day.

  11. Your afternoon tea is so lovely. It's so nice you both set aside time to make it a special event. We have afternoon tea as well, but it's not quite as lovely as yours, my friend. I imagine the sounds of silence was quite amazing to experience as you went about your chores. I love that!

  18. How very civilized an afternoon tea is. I am sure that everyone could benefit from such an experience. Yours looks especially lovely. But my favorite paragraph is your description of being outside and seeing the smoke rise and smelling the peat burning. Delightful!

  19. I like your craft work such as the cards and fridge magnets. Yes, we may be in a lockdown but we are also thankful that we can still enjoy our garden, taking short walks and enjoy the surrounding beauty. Love your tea corner and lots of choices to choose from.

  20. I took a minute to check in on you today, and I felt a real connection. I'd just been thinking that I might make a new invitation for my Black and White Indoor Picnic, and up popped your black and white cards. Then your lovely tea using the same Country Roses dishes like the ones my aunt gave me. I can also connect with your frozen ground - same here, but going to 50's tomorrow.

  25. You make pretty things, I like the fridge magnets.
I'm currently working too, right now I'm sewing ... and it's so much fun.
Unfortunately, it is raining here and the snow is going away, so I can no longer with ski into the forest ... it was a nice sporting challenge every day and I like the exercise.
Best regards to you and I wish you wonderful tea times :-) I love goodies.

  27. I have the same feeling when I look out of the window and see this wonderful view, now the trees without leaves don't hide the houses anymore, but I see the smoke coming out of chimneys and in some way it calms me down. It is worse and worse for me to support the lockdown and my husband usually a very social man, is getting depressed !

  30. Sorry I'm so late Lorraine but I had to tell you, when this current lockdown was announced my daughter suggested a couple of things for us to do to have something to look forward to. Every Wednesday I cook dinner for daughter, son-in-law and grandson and afterwards we play a board game, and on Fridays my daughter does a cream tea just for the two of us, only because the guys aren't really into that sort of thing! It's good to have something to look forward to :-)
