Another Step Closer To The Dream

There is a SOLD sign in the front garden, it does say subject to contract in very small print underneath but none the less it is there.  I do keep going to the window to make sure it is still there and smiling.  It has been a dream for so long and now we are living the reality.  I am so excited I keep pinching myself.  My husband is also walking around with a big grin on his face too, we look at each other and laugh each knowing what the other is thinking.  We have enjoyed browsing the estate agents websites and we are also perusing Home Reports.  We have quite the list of possibilities, time will tell.  We have got into the routine of checking for new properties every day.   We also have a list ready of holiday lets so that we can book something as soon as we know dates.  Quotes are been sought for removals and storage, quite the difference in price by packing boxes yourself.  There is a minor hiccup with this option, we are unable to get cardboard boxes from any of the local shops.  Who knew boxes could be such a dilemma and the price of them to buy are extortionate.

Although exciting times life goes on as normal, I have made a start on a throw/lap blanket all ready for our new home.  It has been on my list of things to do for so long but finally a start has been made.

I would like to make a few and have them rolled up in a basket, it is certainly a long term project and not one that will be portable enough to travel with, but I will work on them until such times we move and it/they need to be packed.

I have prepared a sewing project for when we are in transit between homes, a baby quilt for my eldest daughters best friend.  It is cut and pinned all ready to be tacked into place.

An outline plan drawn out all ready to begin.

Even the cotton chosen and needles packed into a project bag ready.

Now that I have projects ready for the interim period between homes I can now make a start on sorting out the craft room, a mammoth task.  Years of projects, collections and treasures to be thinned out or packed.  How on earth do you make decisions like that?  We are going to have the same dilemmas with the shed and the workshop.  We are working on a dolls house for Honey at the moment it is slow going  but hopefully it will be finished before we move and in good time for her birthday.  How do you decide what to do with possessions when moving?

See you soon.

  3. Wowzer! How wonderful!

Is it possible to find boxes by following the folks who are moving? I have heard that sometimes people see folks moving in and offer to take their boxes off their hands. Our local grocery does offer boxes, but it is best to talk to the manager and have him save the boxes out back. The least expensive boxes I could find are the 70 cent ones from a local big box hardware store. They are perfect because they have handles and can't be packed too heavy as they are just the right size. I did buy them for the books that had to be packed at my husband's place. I hate hauling books.

  4. Whenever we move we get boxes from a local liquor store, they always have lots and they're very sturdy. The quilt is going to be so cute!

  5. How exciting! My husband and I faced this dilemma several years ago when we sold our big family home and downsized to the cottage we are now living in. It was tough sorting and sifting through all of the stuff we had accumulated over the years, and we got rid of over half of what we owned. The one thing I can tell you is that I never think of all that stuff we got rid of now. In fact, it was a relief to have fewer belongings.

  6. Moving is such a monumental task. We've made two big moves in the last six years and each time we've had to get rid of a lot of our belongings. When you stay in one place for a while you tend to acquire a lot of things.

  7. I like the look of your new blanket. Have you looked at freecycle for some moving boxes. There are often offers of some on our local one. X

  8. Wow! That was a fast sale! I hope it all goes through well. As someone who has moved far too much, I understand what's ahead of you. Boxes are always an issue. If you can talk to a school where they print a lot of stuff, there are often paper boxes that are a good size for books, crafts and heavy things. They are sturdy and come with lids.
How fun to be making something for your new home!

  10. How exciting! That was very fast sale. I'm facing the same dilemma as you although we're not moving yet. I'm trying to get rid of things a little bit at a time. Although I've taken many things to the resale stores it never seems as though we have less stuff! The blanket looks beautiful.

  12. Great news! Hope everything goes smoothly.

I confess we paid for a fully packed service when we moved and it was some of the best money ever spent, it removed most of the stress on moving day, well worth the cash for me. Not something everyone would want to do but it was great for us.

  16. Have you thought of trying Freegle to find boxes? When I was moving I advertised on there and a chap selling electric and electronic bits and pieces which he bought in bulk in big boxes and sold on in small boxes. He collapsed the boxes as he emptied them so all I need was a very large roll of packing tape. And it is worth buying a tape dispenser for the purpose.

  17. Goodness.. like I say I admire you for this move. We have so much here at the farm it would be a gargantuan task. My poor kids will have to deal with all my stuff. :-) ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  18. Your house news will give you such incentive to dream up new things. I love all of your recent projects and the mouse bag was beautiful. The yarn for the throw is a gorgeous colour, I used to frightened of anything from the yellow palette but I am really onto it now! Jo x

  19. Having just sorted through my own craft boxes to move into my own little craft room, I can sympathise with you, it is a mammoth task! No doubt you'll discover things you have not missed but are really glad to have found :-) Congratulations on selling the house!

  20. So many tips on where to get boxes. I hope at least a few of the tips help you.
My daughter's house just sold and she's looking for a condo but there's not much available in her price range. Exciting, yes, but not all fun. We're going with her to look at a place later today.

  22. In the fifteen or more moves that I have made it has never seemed to get easier to cull out some of my treasures...especially books and craft projects. However, I am comforted in that my adult children keep assuring me that I have made progress. So while I do not have any helpful hints, you can count on me to be cheering you on as you pack. [For boxes have you checked to see if you could get some from folks who have just moved? xx

  23. I admire your talent and enjoy seeing your progress!

  24. Sounds like you are making some headway.....projects to be completed and plans for packing. I have not moved in 35 years. I can't imagine how I would pack it all up. I don't envy you this difficult job! A good way to sort things out, though! xx K

  25. I used to work in a housing scheme and helped people to move out all the time. We used banana boxes from Asda: I used to ring them up and ask if I could have some, they never refused, and then I'd drove over and collect them. They are very sturdy and have lids, and small enough that when they are full they are not too heavy to lift. It might be worth a try? x

  26. Wow you really have started the new year with a flurry, I wish I felt so enthusiastic, this time of year gets me down, I am working on the dolls house though. Congratulations on the sale of your house, very exciting, I hope it all goes smoothly for you. Renting is certainly the best option, you can take your time and not be pressured into buying the wrong place. Your Mickey Mouse blanket is absolutely gorgeous, and a lovely bag to keep it in, I think Honey will adore it. The dinosaur park looked fun. The baby quilt looks adorable :-)

  27. In the States, we get boxes for free at: the recycling center, in the grocery store (ask) and I go to the liquor store and ask for them. Also at a university bookstore, when they get shipments in they are free. Actually any store that receives goods has boxes that they break down and throw away.

glad you are realizing your dream :)

  33. Gosh, I wouldn't know where to start if we were packing. It is a good way to declutter and rediscover items that have been forgotten about (or would that just be me and my craft stash). Love the baby quilt design xx

  34. We are spending our days packing boxes - and as we go sorting out things that can go to charity shops. It's amazing how much stuff we have accumulated since we moved here 10 years ago!

  35. Fingers crossed. We found when we moved to a completely new area in 2005 that we should have rented for 6 months to a year to get a feel for the area and such. We bought a house way out of town and spent a lot of time and money traveling to work and to places on weekends. We could've avoided a lot of expense if we had rented and got the "lay of the land" as they say. Good luck with your move. Here in the USA, the big box stores (Home Depot and Lowes) sell different size moving boxes very cheap. Avoid the big ones as they're a pain to lift and move around if you're going to store stuff and then move it later.

  36. Wow....time marches on and the move is almost here. I'd choose a few projects then pack rest in boxes and list what you have in each box. Giving away items you've not used in 6 mo to a year is a help...do I really need that item? Take what you really need, then maybe get something there once you move? just a suggestion....not taking all your furniture and books? Your hedgehog quilt is so cute! Be careful while sorting/packing. Not always easy on the body! God bless and my prayers!

  39. Ican imagine that it is rather stressful to wait for a buyer and hope that you sell you house soon ! What an adventure ! I just imagine if I had to move out here with all the stuff accumulated during over 40 years ! I would have the same with my painting atelier as you with yoursorting out your craft room, indeed a real mammoth task.

  41. Moving is exciting and stressful - once things are sorted and the move is complete the fun begins. It is hard deciding what stays and what goes especially when it comes to a craft room, I always think I'll use 'it' someday. Your quilt is adorable!!
