Five on Friday

The changing seasons from Summer to Autumn brings with it an abundance of fruit/vegetables.  A bountiful harvest years ago would ensure eating well through the hardship of winter.  Whilst   preserving food is not a necessity for most people these days, it is a wonderful addition to the winter store cupboard and a great delight for over the festive period.

My five on Friday this week, is my go to books at this time of year to make jams, chutneys and pickles.

Whilst a huge amount of recipes are available on the internet and written by celebrity chefs, I still like to peruse a book.  I love looking at the pictures and the list of ingredients and reading some of the notes I have made from previous years.

My first book is one of my favourites for jam and some of the more unusual recipes that I make nearer to Christmas for a seasonal taste.

There is a wonderful recipe for cranberry jelly and  rhubarb and ginger jelly perfect for spooning over a plain cake.

My second book is  great go to book for my favourite green tomato chutney, a must to use the last of the tomatoes that just won't ripen.

There is also a lovely section on herbs which I have been experimenting with a little this year as we had such a rich crop.

Number three is the Women's Institute book which I find inspiring as it uses a lot of store cupboard ingredients and a couple of no cook chutneys that I am going to give a try.

Four is  a book that I like to browse as it as traditional favourites alongside some of the more unusual.

The only drawback of this book is the lack of pictures, which I must admit I do enjoy looking at but instead there are some wonderful written methods for preserving and bottling.

Finally my last book is a A - Z book which I find useful, although it does lack pictures it has a wonderful guide for pectin content when jam making and a great end of season relish that uses up all the odds and ends from the garden, perfect for this time of year.

This was free with a gardening magazine and is one that I constantly flick though.  I think that may be because of its size and the ease of reference due to the A - Z configuration.

I am once again joining Amy over at love made my home for the Five on Friday fun, pop over and join in the fun.

Have you got a go to book or do you use the internet?

See you soon.

  2. Great recommendations! I'll have a look at those because we have so much fruit each year that needs to be processed somehow...

  3. I used to keep lots of recipe books. I even has thick files of hand copied recipes. Now it is easier to browse through the internet. So fun to be able to pickle your abundant harvest and some to make jams. Homemade are always the best!

I never would have thought to even try to make it. I just read that a blogger friend made marmalade and it just looked wonderful.

  10. Nice cookbooks. I updated my canning/preserving book a few years ago. Mine was a bit outdated. I agree, pictures in cookbooks are a must for me. I thought about buying an updated mix cookbook but once I perused it, i decided against it. No photos, while the old one did. I'm thinking of getting it rebound. Have a good weekend!

  12. I feel inspired to dig out some jars this weekend! I have some plums frozen in the freezer and I am sure they will make a delicious chutney for the fall season. Thanks for the inspiration!

  17. Looking at those books make me want to try and make some jam and chutney. My late mother made fantastic chutney. I tried to make plum jam once. It was ok but I over boiled it. Joan at www.aviewtothefells.com

  21. I don't preserve, but I do get recipes for other foods. I used to use some cookbooks, but mostly magazines.

Now-a-days most of my favorites have been found on Pinterest.

  22. I agree I like to have photos in my cook books. I live finer and marrow jam. Marrow is really just the carrier for the ginger so you don't taste it but gives it a good consistency and texture, the marrow that is.

  23. I'll never give up my cookbooks but I have made recipes recommended by fellow bloggers. A picture is always helpful and although I don't make jam, have made chutney on occasion.
Your collection of cook books looks nice.

  24. I have so many cookbooks and will only buy the ones with photos so I have a rough idea of what it should look like. I do love seeing the blog cookery link up parties as they are like a virtual cook book to click on what takes my fancy on the day. For a proper cook book, I always seem to go to Nigella, Jamie Oliver or of course, Delia Smith (you can never go wrong with her recipes!). My hubby makes the jam and chutneys in my house which is always such a treat (especially the clearing up of the kitchen afterwards!!). xx

  27. I do love using books, too, especially as I usually have made notes on what did or didn't work for me when I made the recipe before. I've never made chutneys, but they sure are delicious. Need to try those. I also want to try marmalade sometime; it's my favorite toast-topper.
You will have a delicious collection of preserves for the holidays.
