Five on Friday

This week has brought mixed blessings with the weather, lots of showers and lower temperatures with a little sunshine to brighten your day.  This has meant that I have spent a lot of time indoors again, neglecting the garden somewhat in favour of a warmer and certainly drier pursuit.

I have chosen feet for my five on Friday post as I have spent a lot of time contemplating feet this week in one form or another.  I have been browsing my many books and patterns for socks, I love the idea and luxury of hand knitted socks but don't feel confident enough to have a go.  My dear Mum who is an avid knitter is going to sit with me while I give it a go.

Next up in the same vain is a pattern that I have found for a wooden shoe to help the little ones learn how to tie their own shoe laces.  I thought this was a perfect little gift for the Grand children so is now on my to do list.

Such a simple but effective idea...

Thirdly, as you all know I love all things vintage and I have a very large craft room which I hoard and display my many collections.  This is a shoemakers last which I adore, I often wonder where the shoes are now that have been made.

There are various sizes, which are such a joy to behold. It is wonderful to ponder and reflect on a trade that is quite rare today.

The joys of being able to make your own shoes...

I also have a beautiful but small collection of vintage wooden shoe trees that adorn the craft room wall.

Last but not least is a wooden child's shoe mould, I really want to try and find out more about their uses.  I just fell in love with it and consequently brought it home.

My five on Friday featuring my take on feet, luxury socks, a simple make and sharing my collections.

Once again joining Amy over at Love Made My Home for the weekly five on Friday post.  Why not pop over and join in the fun.  I am busy getting the house ready and baking for the mouths to feed over the weekend.  Two of my daughters and their families are visiting this weekend, exciting times.  Have you any plans for the weekend?

See you soon.

  13. What a wonderful collection of footy items!! The lasts are amazing and I bet they look great all displayed together. Good luck with the sock knitting, I am a little envious that you have someone to teach you! To answer your question about my boxes, they came from Sainsburys a couple of years ago, don't know if they still do them, but Homebase have some the same but in different patterns I happened to notice. I wanted to say a special thank you too to you because I have noticed that you always go and visit all of the other five on Friday people and comment and I think that is so very kind of you! Thank you so much as always for joining in. Remember there will be no fiving in August, but back in September! Hope that you have a great weekend and a great August too! xx

  17. A great post. I remember knitting some cream coloured Aran socks with cabled tops for my dad many years ago when he and my mum used to do Scottish Dancing. Mum used to knit them too! Scottish dancing was quite hard on the socks. Very interesting to see your collection of shoe lasts. Have a great weekend. Barbara xx

  20. Can you imagine having shoes made for you? They would be so well fitting and well made. Those shoe lasts are pretty cool.
Handmade socks sound luxurious. Nice your mom can show you.
I have to admit that when my children were little, they got shoes with velcro! I guess they eventually learned. :)
    Have a nice weekend. xo

  21. you are afoot in this post! I like all the shoemakers lasts and the last photo you shared is lovely! The wooden shoe for children sounds fun. I should see if I can find that somewhere here in our town library where my daughter works. We are staying home this weekend! It has been quite hot here, 102 today, 106 on Thurs. Out and about today ok, except my windshield was quite hot at one point driving home. Glad it finally cooled down. I just finished an online book I've been working on most of the week, thus no blog posts til tomorrow! Have a good weekend!

  23. I'm so impressed with your "foot" collection. Knitting socks is such a fun activity. If you are a new sock knitter, Winwick Mum has a great sock tutorial: http://winwickmum.blogspot.com/2014/05/basic-sock-pattern-and-tutorial.html
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  24. Fascinating post! I don't think I would want to make my own shoes, but I think the one for children to teach them to tie their laces is a great idea. Interesting collection of wooden forms!

  25. Aloha. Oh I do hope you learn how to make socks. That is something on my to learn list (I don't know why since we barely use socks due to the tropical weather, but it would be so lovely!). Such amazing history in your collection of shoe moulds. Wow! It was so nice to meet you and to learn a little about you. I am looking forward to more conversations. =) Have a wonderful weekend with your family! Aloha.

  28. Hi, that is a great idea to knit socks! I love knitting very much and as the weather is cold, I have been knitting. I cannot wait to see your works! I love to see your shoemaker! I also love vintages and have some from my grandmother.

    Cheers, Sandra

  29. Very cool wooden collection! You can knit socks! I know you can

  30. You just wait - once you have knitted one pair of socks you won't be able to stop, it's addictive. I love this post, your collections are amazing. And my children learned to tie their shoelaces on a plastic shoe very similar to that wooden one, only being plastic, it obviously wasn't as nice. I hope you had a good weekend. x
