Five On Friday

We are back to Friday again and therefore joining Amy over at Love Made My home for the weekly get together.  This is a week that started with the decluttering  of the kitchen , sorting and cleaning cupboards and drawers and accessing the freezers.  There was an abundance of leeks that had been in there for some time, therefore my chosen five this week are meals that included the use of the humble leek.

We had a roast chicken dinner on Sunday with all the trimmings which included creamed leeks as a side.  I didn't take any photos but rest assured it was good.

There was so much chicken leftover that I made a chicken/ham and leek pie and also a chicken stew with dumplings both of course using leek.

The sauce in the pie was cream based and topped with shortcrust pastry, definitely not a healthy option.

There was enough stew for two days with enormous dumpling that fluffed up once cooked, a real winter warmer.  Perfect for the cold weather that we have had this week.

My fourth use of leek was a shepherds pie, an old favourite from our Army days.  I haven't bought any minced lamb for awhile so was quite surprised at the price.  We are considering this as a treat, you have to have a treat now and again.

I made them individually and topped them off with mustard mash to give them extra flavour.

They were good...

Finally, leek and potato soup that I make on a regular basis there is enough for today too.  Another warming dish for these cooler days.

How do you use your surplus vegetables languishing in the freezer?

See you soon.

  1. Love leeks particularly in soup. Your creamed leeks sound good. I usually have a surplus of green beans. They often end up in soups or stir fries. Have a good weekend. Barbara x

  2. Leeks do add extra flavour to a dish. I particularly like the combination of chicken and leeks. With just two of us on most days to feed, unless the family are around, I find it's the cauliflower head that has to be used more than once and needs perking up with cheese sauce.

  3. I love leeks what a great use of them. Live that you add mustard to the shepherds pie topping. And I hear you about the price of minced lamb, sigh. Xxxx

  7. Ooooh I am so coming to your house for tea. Everything looks beautiful.
My leftover veg...including part bags of frozen usually gets made up into a our elegantly named Garbage Broth. Leftover cooked veg is often made into a pie, a quiche or a frittata. Nothing goes to waste here.
I don't use cream as I don't like it very much but I do make a chicken pie with a roux based leek sauce which tastes very creamy once cooked in the pie.
    Have a lovely weekend-x-

  18. I make a pan of soup every Saturday morning with all the vegetables that are left over from the week. We have some leeks languishing in the bottom of the fridge too this week, I think it will have to be leek and potato soup. Thank you for the inspiration, have a lovely weekend xx

  21. Your recipes look delicious! I use leek and any left over bacon or ham in macaroni cheese (had this tonight) with a tiny bit of cayenne pepper on the top before it goes in the oven - yummy! I tend to make soup with any vegetables that are left or put them in a stew. Thanks for your comment on my blog, you are coming up as a no reply blogger so couldn't reply direct, but if you are ever in Spalding, let me know and we could possibly meet :) Take care and have a great weekend xx

  22. Five wonderful ways with leeks!!! I like them in all sorts of things and will use them sometimes instead of onions if I want a milder flavour. Thank you too for being so faithful and visiting everyone each week, I appreciate it so much and I am sure that others do too! xx

  29. Yum, leeks. Last week I used all the leftover vegie bits and pieces in the fridge for a nice soup. I roasted them first then simmered in a little stock and pureed. Can't repeat it though because it's pot luck with what is in there.

  30. Oh I love leeks :) I'd try all those things for tea.

  33. This post is making me very hungry, especially that shepherd's pie, it looks so yummy. I tend to make cottage pie rather than shepherd's pie as lamb mince is more expensive and the family prefer beef to lamb, I'm quite happy with either. I'm a big fan of leeks too, I'd eat them more often if Mick liked them a bit more.

  34. Delicious recipes using the leeks. I love leek and potato soup.

  37. Oh my goodness! Now don't these dishes all look so good! Truly comfort food and perfect for cold winter days. Your kitchen must smell heavenly :) I love your polka-dot soup server - so cute. I love making soups and pot pies with leftover bits, too. Right now I have a surplus of blackberries and need to use them up. I see some pie in my future:) xx Karen

  39. Everything looks so good. At this moment, late on Saturday afternoon, I have a large pot of this and that turning itself to soup on the stove. Leftover chicken, wilted celery, a few carrots and onion and garlic. I had soaked some beans, so they'll give it body.
What is mustard mash? Is it mashed potatoes with mustard added?

  40. Leeks don't go over well at my house, but I am roasting a chicken today and you inspired me to use some of those leftovers in a pot pie later this week. Yum.

  41. Ooh, lovely warming dishes! Left over veggies get turned into soup here. I've started buying levels again after not having bought them for ages because of a fusspot daughter. I decided that we will have them again and she'll have to lump it! After the initial fuss, she's eating them now, I must have worn her down! Thanks for visiting everyone's five, you are a sweetie :-) xx

  42. Oops, leeks, not levels! Flipping auto correct...

  43. Usually make soup, or cover with a cheese sauce topped with breadcrumbs.

  44. mmm those meals look tasty. I've got some leeks in my fridge to encorporate into a shepherd's pie like Delia suggests.

I tend to use left over veggies in spag bol if they'll go or soups and stews if they won't

  45. They all look good - and I love that one meal can generate so many more. That's the best way for me to be efficient in the kitchen. Enjoy!
