Five on Friday

October seems to be disappearing in a flash, we are already coming to its end.  I have enjoyed the very slow process of the change in seasons, a slight shift rather than the usual full on stormy rains and drop in temperatures.  We are still pottering in the garden albeit for short spells, there still seems so much to do.  I even mowed the front lawn this week, which I imagine will be its last until next Spring.   We have even added a few bulbs here and there so that we have some bright colours to look forward to coming out of the gloom of Winter.

I looked through the pictures on the camera last night to establish what I had been doing all week, it appears that most of my time was spent crafting for Christmas.  I thought I would defer my makes until a little later.  The bulk of the remainder of the photos were of Mickey our standard poodle.  So after doing a little research I thought I would share some facts about standard poodles.  I am as usual joining Amy over at Love Made My Home for the weekly get together. Hope you will pop over and see what the others have been up to.

I am just going to wait here until my Mum comes in...

One

The name poodle comes from the German word 'pudel' which means to splash in water and is believed to have originated in Germany.

Two

Poodles were standardized in France where they were bred as water retrievers and gun dogs.  They went to become the French national dog.

Three

All poodles no matter what their size are considered to be the same breed.  Toy, miniature and standard refer only to the size of the dog.  The standard is the oldest of the three from which the other two were bred down.

Four

As far as intelligence goes the poodle is rated second only to the border collie.  Apparently this means they are easy to train, respond well to commands and house train quickly.

Five

The poodle has a single coat that doesn't appear to shed, it does but gets tangled in the coat instead of falling off.  The coat is a single one unlike most dogs that have double coats.  The fur is often referred to as hair.

I will add that they do take a lot of time to keep on top of their grooming, needing brushing on a daily basis and cutting every three to six weeks.  We don't bother to keep a fancy shape anymore as he likes to have a run about in the back field and often comes in covered in mud as this time of year.  He is wonderful with the Grandchildren and loves to be included in their games.  He does sometimes think he is a lap dog and loves to jump on your knee for a cuddle.  He is a joy and great company.

Do you have a favourite breed?

See you soon.

  2. I love all animals, and although I have had cats all my life, I do love dogs. Hmmm, hard to pick a favourite, but I would have to say the Golden Retriever. But I love so many breeds it is hard to choose one! Your photos are lovely!

  3. Awww, he's such a handsome boy. There were many facts there that I didn't know before. I do love standard poodles, there are lots of breeds I like, hard to choose a favourite. We did a lot of research before getting a dog ourselves and though I hadn't had anything to do with them before, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels seemed to tick all the boxes for us so that's what we got and I have to say that they're such a wonderful breed.

  4. He looks like a lovely dog, and it's nice that he doesn't shed. My favorite dog is a collie, probably because that is the dog our family had. She was beautiful!

  7. I tend to be very nervous of dogs having had a bad experience with an Alsation as a child but Mickey looks very friendly and companionable. He is a very handsome boy.

  8. When my mother passed, I took her llittle love Molly who was a toy poodle. We had her for three years. She sure required lots of care, but both John and I loved her for her sweet nature and intelligence. She brought much joy. So a poodle is the only dog I have had as an adult. My parents raised collies when I was a kid. Love them, too, but they require lots of grooming as well. You taught me some new things today and I think that Mickey is terribly handsome.

  9. The last picture, the one of your "lap" dog, is utterly adorable! We just lost another member of our dog family as youngest daughter's 16 year old terrier mix passed, so seeing your post has helped my heart.

  13. Awwww look at that cute face. I love dogs.
We have a Patterdale. He's as soft as a brush, a greedy little piggy and our gorgeous little boy all rolled into one.
He is very special to me as Andy watched the litter being born and chose him for me as soon as he popped out for a wedding anniversary present. I waited sixteen years to have a safe enough enviroment for dog.

Hope you gave the hospital an ear bashing this morning-x-

  15. He is a splendid dog and your five facts were interesting. We used to have a black standard poodle living next door and he was a lovely dog. We had a welsh border collie when I was a child but since then I've always had cats:)

  16. I like large dogs so I prefer the standard poodle, like them unclipped too, looks more natural. Didn't know their history though, interesting post.

  17. Nice poodle pictures ! I think it is the only dog which has all sizes S M L XL, lol ! I like them all, although maybe the biggest one is my favorite, unfortunately I don't see them very often !

  18. I love your big beautiful Poodle. The Poodle has always been one of my favorite breeds. Poppy and I have owned two, Teddy and Pooh. Both were very intelligent and lovable.

  19. Lots of great facts today. I had a poodle growing up. My parents got him when I was 6 weeks old and he died just before my 19th birthday! He was my constant companion and it was devastating when he died. Now we have a small British Lab, Chloe and she is the sweetest thing. She's always with me.
    Blessings,

  24. Mickey is a lovely fellow isn't he! I can imagine he has real personality. Fascinating to read more about his breed of dog. Thank you for being part of Five On Friday, hope you have a great weekend!

  25. He is a very handsome dog and I enjoyed learning about his breed. I am a dog lover, myself, and have previously owned Border Collies, but never a poodle. My daughter has a Poodle/Labrador cross (Labradoodle) and he is a very intelligent dog. She has allergies to pet dander, but not with this breed, due to the coat. It's good to let him romp in the fields :) x Karen

  26. Well...all this information was new to me. He looks like a good friend to have around. We have never had a dog or cat but we have a niece, a nephew and a friend who have all acquired Labradoodles. Must be a going trend right now. Great 5. Have a good weekend.

  28. My mom had two poodles and they were very smart.. not at the same time.. first a black medium sized one and then later an apricot toy. I have loved my Cairn terrier more than any dog we've had and we've had a LOT of different breeds over the years. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  30. Mickey looks like a lovely dog and your grandchildren must love him as I expect he's good with them. Our local daughter is looking after a labradoodle for a friend this week. She says he is the most obedient dog she's ever known and I think it's because of the combination of being a labrador and a poodle both known for being intelligent and gentle. We don't have a dog, but in the past we've had a labrador and a spaniel.

  33. Very interesting facts. I'm not a dog person, they terrify me no matter what size they are. But it's nice to look at them in pictures.

  34. Beautiful dog! I have had 2 Belgian Shepherds, both now in the dogs' heaven. The Norwegian Forest Cat Sissi keeps me company now..

  36. We don't have a dog now though we just got the cutest most rascally little kitten. When I did have dogs I always like labs.

  37. He is gorgeous, and I like that you don't trim him into fancy puffs of hair.

  41. Hi!
What a adorable blogpost and with many facts about poodles I never heard about. We have no animals in our family anymore. We had two cats in many years, but nowadays they are walking in the Heaven for cats. This weekend we met a dog - a white wolflike one - which visited us last Summer, and he is living near by our eldest son in Goethenburg.
    Happy Sunday!
    Best wishes,
    AnnA

  43. Mickey is quite handsome. I had a miniature poodle many many years ago. He was a delight. My favorite dog was a German Shorthair Retriever. Sometimes I wondered if she was the smartest "person" in the house! Ha! Now, I am on my way to being the crazy cat lady with 4 cats.

  44. What a beautiful companion. We had a lab/spaniel cross for 16 years so he is my favourite breed :)
