The Sweet Taste Of Summer

The weather at the moment is glorious, perfect for sitting in the garden with an iced tea chatting watching the world go by.  We have had a quiet weekend marvelling and taking full advantage of the sun just sitting in the garden.  We did go for a stroll around the garden centre and had a meal there, although it didn't really save me cooking as I needed to make soup for my Dad.  I made a rather luxurious leek and mushroom one which was very tasty.

I also used up the last of the parsnips from the freezer and made a parsnip and sweet potato soup, adding peppers, celery and onion to give it an extra burst of flavour.

Not forgetting the nutmeg a must with parsnips.

We really have been rewarded on a daily basis for the fruits of our labour in the garden.  We are harvesting and revelling in the taste of summer.

Lettuce, onions and strawberries.  The onions are a delight and add flavour to most of our meals at the moment.

Broad beans and peas are been harvested and are a real delight.  A few peas added to our salads are a sweet surprise.

My little plot of containers are producing well and are a great reward, the beautiful sweet taste of summer.  What could be better.

See you soon.

  1. Whether its hot or not I can always eat a nice soup, if fact I am having some tomorrow. It is amazing what you can get from the garden when growing in pots and containers. x

  2. We are basking in wall to wall sunshine today and it should last a few days. I have been a washer woman this morning and am caught up completely....now for the ironing. My garden has battled to produce despite the rain and wind and has not done too shabby at all.

  4. Oh I just love soup...any time of the year. Isn't it nice to go out to the garden and find some goodies for dinner? We don't have much of a garden, but onions, tomatoes and cucumbers are great for salads.

  7. Your produce looks and sounds delicious. There is nothing tastier than home grown fruit and veggies. You have inspired me to make some chicken and celery soup from Sunday dinner's leftovers.

  9. Lovely veggies and your soup looks wonderful... although the thought of eating soup right now in not the first thing I would want to put in my mouth in these temps. It has been very hot and humid here. I'm about ready for fall!

  17. Your soup looks delicious as do the pickings from your garden. If there is one thing I do like about summer it's the vegetables and salads.
Hope the rest of the week stays nice for you-x-

  22. It's such a great time of year when you grow your own veggies, things seem to grow so fast as the moment and there's always something to harvest. I envy your strawberries, we used to have them all summer long when we had the allotment, I'm really missing them this year.

  23. I have harvested blueberries for the first time from my garden and I am praying that my hard green little tomatoes become big and juicy ripe before too long. Are you going to give us the recipe for the leek and mushroom soup? =D It just looks so good!

  25. Your food looks amazing . . . I hate to say this, but I have never had a parsnip. I love vegetables, so, why have I never tried it?
What is your favorite way to cook them?

  27. Your garden is doing so well - what the rabbits and rains did to ours is an abomination. I did have some wonderful healthy tomatoes going in extra huge pots but the deer got them - honestly we are kinda giving up. This is the 3rd year of no yields, and we cannot kill the wildlife, so it is what it is.

Thank you for your sweet and good wishes on the arrival of our sweet little grandbaby. We are over the moon about it all! Hugs! ♥

  33. I just ate a bean fresh off the vine in our garden yesterday and told my son exactly what you wrote. It is the taste of summer to me!! Nothing like it!!! I grew up next door to my grandmother and she always had a beautiful garden and I would sneak in and pick her string beans all the time. That is what the taste of them reminds me of to this day. It kind of makes me a little teary eyed. She was a wonderful grandma and I adored her. xoxo
