Five on Friday - House Building

As is the custom for Friday, I am joining Amy over at Love Made My Home for the weekly get together.  Gerard and I are big on lists, we have a list for a list but at the moment we are concentrating on our Winter activities list.  We do a lot of jigsaws/crosswords little wood projects and of course sewing/crochet I am sure you have the picture.  This year we want to make a dolls house, furniture and decorate it.  We bought a house some time ago (years) with a view to refurbishing it but the children loved it and play with it every time they visit.

We don't want to take away the pleasure from them so our plan is to add to the estate.    This week I am sharing five books that we are using to plan our winter adventure together.

We have already started to pick up small patterned fabrics and some mini tools essential for the task.  We are quite keen for it to be played with so it needs to be sturdy, some of the projects are made from paper which really aren't suitable.

We have plans to go to a miniature fair next month to get some more ideas and pick up a few bits I am sure.

In the meantime back to reality the house needs a good wipe down from sticky fingers from the last visitor.  We have no real plans just pottering this weekend, maybe a meal out tomorrow.  Have you got a favourite restaurant?

See you soon.

  1. What a great project! You'll have to look at Queen Mary's dolls house in Windsor but I expect you've got loads of ideas already. I look forward to seeing how you get on. :-)

  3. This looks like a fabulous project and can not wait for your updates. My favourite restaurant is a Greek Taverna up here on the Wirral, it is fab and always full of people just back off their holidays. Have a great weekend xx

  4. My parents refurbished a dollhouse that had been made by my paternal grandfather. It was a precious, wonderful gift for my daughter. It sits in her attic these days. One of her friends mentioned how much fun it was to play with that dollhouse years ago. You and your husband will have a pleasant winter doing the updates.

  7. Looking forward to seeing your transformation of a dolls house. I find them fascinating.
We love Frankie & Benny's, any of the Farmhouse Inns. They do a fabulous serve yourself carvery, or a local pub/restaurant run by a butcher/farmer.....fantastic Sunday lunches if we don't want to travel too far.
    Have a lovely weekend-x-

  8. Looks like you have selected a wonderful project to fill those winter months. I love looking at doll's houses. We tend not to eat meals out except when on holiday but we do seem to have elevenses out two or three times a week, we always enjoy coffee and a bun or scone and our local garden centre is a favourite:)

  9. Well this project looks set to keeping you both well occupied during those long winter months. I hope we'll get to see more pix when it's finished?

  10. What a wonderful project for winter! I should make more lists. They help keep me on track otherwise I seem to jump all over the place. I hope you'll share some of your projects through the colder months.

I enjoy visiting small, independent restaurants when we're out and about. There are so many chain restaurants, all the same, serving the same food. It's nice to find a small place with different food.

    Have a lovely weekend

  11. What an exciting project. Your family are so lucky. I remember my father made me a stable once when I was about 7. I absolutely treasured it. Have a great weekend. B x

  13. This sounds like the perfect winter project! I love dollhouses, and hope to someday have one. I'm going to check our library for the books you've listed. Your grandchildren are going to have a wonderful time once you've redecorated!

  15. How fun to have a project like this that you want to do together. My husband would not be a bit interested. I'm a list maker too and so is my husband. If it weren't for my lists I would forget everything. Ha ha!

  20. What an exciting project! It will be a lovely thing to work on over the winter. I am sure you will make it into a wonderful home. Can I suggest to lovely blogs to you, one who is very experienced in miniatures, Mockingbird Hill Cottage, and the other who is very new to this, but having great fun with it, Note Songs. Both are lovely ladies and their minis are well worth looking at. I will look forward to seeing how you get on and what you make. Thank you for joining Five On Friday, I hope you have a great weekend! xx

  22. What a nice project to do together. You must have good small motor skills! Dear and I go to a favorite Mexican Restaurant every Tuesday for lunch. Our favorite restaurant in downtown Seattle is the Metropolitan Grill. Now you've made me hungry with that question. :) Thanks for your visit to my 5...

  24. I think you'll really enjoy fixing your doll house up. My daughter and and my husband built a doll house for me years ago. They started with a kit but along the way they modified it and also added a kitchen to one end. Gradually it got filled with furniture etc. and now the project is done. It stands on a table in the diningroom and I still like it a lot but I think the planning and the getting it all just the way I wanted it was the most fun.

  25. Dollhouses are so neat. I look forward to seeing what you make for a dollhouse or if you build an all new one. I have a fantastic dollhouse.. you can click on a link on my blog to see it. It's a vintage one and full of amazing things, plus the floor is a very intricate inlaid wood. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  26. I can imagine you having a grand time with this project! We have two wooden doll houses that my grand girls enjoy playing with in our household...one on either side of the house. One is plain wood and has sturdy furniture...I think it is a Melissa and Doug model that cost $100.00, but the other one is painted with some sturdy furnishings as well and my daughter found it at Goodwill for less than $20.00! The girls do not care about the cost...they just enjoy their little dolls having adventures in either one :) Happy Weekend! I am having a picnic with some women at the beach...no favorite restaurant...although I heard some promising talk about stopping at the Tillamook Dairy for ice cream!

  27. What a beautiful doll house. I never had a doll house when I was young. If I have grand kids, I would love to get them one. You are so good with your projects and you have so many great ideas to decorate the house.

  28. How marvelous! Your doll house is so beautiful and those books look wonderful for helping you know how to furnish it. Thank you so much for popping in to see me as you know I'm doing the same thing! I don't have a house though. I just built rooms from foam board. Good luck on your journey and we'll have to check in on each other to see how we're doing.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  29. What a great project, I bet the children love playing with it. We bought a doll's house in kit form years ago for Eleanor but we never got round to building it, a shame really. Enjoy your meal out, we're planning a meal out this weekend too, ongoing celebrations for Eleanor's 18th, but I'm not sure where we'll go, it'll be her choice.

  32. That's a cute doll house. My daughter loved to play with dolls when she was little, but neither of my granddaughters cared for them. I imagine you will have lots of lovelies to add to the house with these neat plan books!~

  33. Wow....what a great adventure you're about to partake in, I envy you.

A favorite restaurant? Well, for me it is either STEAK houses or a Mexican restaurant. But best of all...anywhere that I don't have to cook.

  39. How much fun! My grandparents made a beautiful dollhouse, and all the furnishings in it. I have it now. It is definitely for show, though. Too many delicate pieces to play with. It's wonderful you are making furnishings that can be played with. Amazed, as always, at all your projects! Looking forward to seeing what you make. xo Deborah

  40. Enjoy adding to the estate - you could have quite a collection I'm sure by the time you've finished. My mum has one and although the grandkids are older it was never one to be played with. Great fun to furnish though - have a fabulous week
