Five on Friday

Summer is here, the season anyway.  Unfortunately here on the East Coast we are still catching up, the weather has been atrocious with cold winds and rain.  We finally managed a couple of days of sun but alas no heat from it the cold winds kept the temperatures down.  So while everyone has been basking in the sun we are still wearing our winter woollies.  I have managed to get out into the garden and get some work done,  progress is slow but at least something is getting done.

I am once again joining Amy over at Love Made My Home for the Five on Friday post.  Why not pop over and join in the fun.

This week I have chosen my garden for my five and will share five vegetables that are doing reasonably well considering the weather.

Lola Rossa a variety of lettuce which we are just starting to harvest and enjoy.

We grow it in a large ceramic pot on the patio and pick from it on a daily basis through the summer months, a few leaves at a time to mix with rocket and little gem.

The broad beans are really healthy considering the winds, we have tied them to a supporting cane so that must have helped the flowers this year are prolific so are looking forward to them.

Spring onions are growing in a plastic trough, at some point I think they should have been thinned out a little so time will tell how they turn out.

The cabbage are doing well planted out in a raised bed, one or two have been attacked by slugs I suspect so I have been saving the egg shells to put around the base which apparently helps.

You can see that this one has been nibbled on slightly.

Finally the little gem lettuce, we started these off in the little plastic greenhouse that we have.  We had a storm awhile ago and the greenhouse along with all the seeds trays were strewn across the lawn.  Not a pretty sight, so we had to start over which was a little disheartening.

The lettuce is grown in a wooden container on the patio.  It just goes to show that you can grow food even in the smallest of gardens.  I have herbs growing out of allsorts of strange containers including an old watering can which just adds to the charm of the garden.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

See you soon.

  9. Good idea to grow the lettuce in a pot close to the house so you can nip out and get some when needed. It seems to be a good year for broad beans - ours seem to be doing well too:)

  15. It looks as though everything is growing really well for you!!! Lots of yummy things to eat! The weather here is horrid again today, I finally have time to sit for the first time this week and thought I would go outside, but it is raining! I guess that is the English summer isn't it, shame though. I hope that we all get some sun soon. Thank you so much for joining in. I hope that you have a great week. xx

  17. Your vegetables are so pretty. Gosh, you're growing better in pots than I am in my garden spot. I didn't know that about egg shell and slugs. I need to try it! Thanks!

  28. Great veggies! A great example to show you don't need masses of space to grow them. Great tip about the eggshells, i must remember that.

  29. You are way ahead of us in the vegetable garden. My daughter planted it just recently. So soon things will be popping up. Lettuce soon! I just was having a fun time going through photos today. I picked some out to make an online Shutterfly book. So I've got to get off computer before my eyes go any more whackier! Spent too much time but it's quiet in the house so that's the best time to do it! Take care and have a good weekend!

  30. Your plants and vegetables are going so well. The snails also totally ate up one of my plants and my lettuce has rotted due to too much rain. Happy gardening and enjoy your weekend!

  31. Your veggies are doing great they all look healthy, I have so many slugs and snails in my garden they ruin everything, I have tried egg shells they do help a little but the blighters still get through. the weather here has turned cold again so I'm in my winter woolies too. Enjoy your weekend. :)

  32. It's cold here today and raining (well, it is the weekend!) so we are all snuggled up and waiting for the sun to shine once more! We love to grow lettuce, especially ones that we can just pick at as we go past. This year we have been caught on the hop so not one edible plant is in the garden except for the fruit trees (where has the year gone!!). Have a wonderful weekend and keep up with the slug control :-) xx
