A Day At A Time

I woke this morning to some beautiful red skies, a delight to see albeit a warning for bad weather if the old saying is to be believed.

A start has been made on my Grandsons school project and I must admit I have quite enjoyed the process.  I have found a wonderful old Scottish Teatime recipes book which I thought I would share with him and using whatsapp maybe do some baking together.  I have sorted out a few leaflets and books that might be useful so I will be walking to the post office later.

Yesterday we went into town to do a food shop, I have been trying for awhile to get a delivery slot to no avail.  I bought extra veg and prepared some for the freezer and UHT milk so I am hopeful that we won't need to go for some time.  We do feel blessed having the finances to be able to buy extra food and of course the room to be able to store it.

I have just made a mixed seed loaf, fresh from the bread making machine that will hopefully last for 3/4 days.  I usually make bread twice a week.  Todays lunch was homemade coleslaw, a salad with homemade honey and wholegrain mustard dressing and asparagus wrapped in ham in cheese sauce.  I can report it was delicious and very filling.  A side of melon and strawberries was also added. Soup is on the menu for supper, homemade leek and sweet potato.

I am working on another project with the Church to bless some of the congregation with a gift bag, so will make soap and some cards tomorrow for it.

The deep cleaning programme continues, this time the shelves, drawers and cupboard in the lounge.  I was surprised how little needed to be thrown away so that made me happy.

Gerard is finally feeling a little better so it is hoped that he will be able to start getting the materials together for us to start working on the dolls house.  A lot of the things we will be needing are stored in the outbuilding and he knows where it all is.  We are getting by a day at a time, each day a day nearer to our dreams of meeting up with the family once again.  There is certainly no hardship in eating good food and passing the day crafting.

Hope all is well with you and that the lockdown wherever you are is bearable.

See you soon.

  1. I think that old saying might just be right this time, we've got a full day of snow in our forecast for tomorrow. It's ages since I've used my bread maker, I used to use it to make dough before making it into breadcakes and baking it in the oven, I really must get it out again.

  2. Good morning Lorraine. Everything looks so tasty and good. I feel the same as you. Very blessed to have our needs met and happy to be safe and warm and fed during all of this. We're having 70 mph wind gusts this morning as a storm front moves through. It's my first time experiencing this in the RV. Dennis was brilliant in his precautions when we moved in, setting extra jacks and an extra heavy skirt. I've prayed for God's protection and now I'm snug as a bug.
Wishing you both a great day and praising God that Gerard is feeling better.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  3. Such a delight to read a post full of optimism! I have to admit there are times I do feel "fed up"! I long for normalcy... as does everyone I imagine! Nevertheless posts like yours do make me thankful for our good health and situation...which is a lot compared to others! As I have said before on other posts your meals look delicious and I can see you are a good cook. Glad to hear Gerald is beginning to feel better and that you will be starting the doll's house soon. I shall look forward to reading about that. keep well Amanda x

  4. Delightful meal you prepared there! We are very lucky to have four Walmarts in our small city, so getting a slot only takes a day or two. I bought some dried milk powder, too, just in case it gets really backed up again.

  5. Glad that Gerard is feeling better. Hope you get on well with your doll's house. My husband and son made me one quite a few years ago and I still haven't done it. Husband needs to move some of his railway stuff from the lounge so I have somewhere to get on with the house. I am making it into the cottage I would love to live in although the roof will be thatched which I wouldn't have for somewhere to live.

I was just wondering about that type of milk.
Is it just the same except shelf stable?
Have a cozy afternoon, my dear friend.

  8. your plates look delicious as always ! Here they started the vaccination program since last Monday. My turn would be in March. I didn't want to but probably I have to if I want to travel ! They are very clever they don't forbid travels, but without a vaccinaton certificate, nobody let you into other countries. I wished I could see my family too !

  9. Never made home-made Coleslaw, but will have a go once we are settled in our new home. Mind you, it will take us a month to unpack I think!!

Your weekend baking looked so good. I will need a new oven at Tycelyn - the present one is teeny. It will be good to bake my first cake there.

    Keep safe.

  21. The red skies are beautiful even though they may bring with them bad weather. It sounds as if you are well prepared for staying at home, warmth, good food and plenty to do as well as time to think about the better times ahead:)

  23. You are making me hungry just looking at your food. I need to get breakfast soon. Morning skies are pretty. I am beginning to feel more like staying at home and getting work done in house. I need to clean out some drawers in kitchen and items back into another room that was partly flooded from a shower last year. Have a blessed day!!!

  24. Good morning, Lorraine. Your food always looks so delicious and tempting. Eating well is such a pleasure during these days, I find. And we are blessed to be able to do so. I'm glad Gerard is feeling better. One day at a time is best!

  25. I'm glad to hear that your husband is feeling better. Damp weather is trying. I think that's what triggered my aching joints. We're well and truly snowed in and there were reports of chaos on the roads in our hilly region and city. Granddaughter was allowed to work from home. Medic daughter has to get to her work in the hospital, but someone with a 4x4 car that can cope with the snow gave her lifts today. I'm sure the baking together session with your grandson by WhatsApp will be fun. I'm glad I managed to shop on line for a food shop with a delivery at the weekend. Hopefully the snow will have cleared by then. Take care my friend, keep well.

  28. Your meals look so healthy and delicious! Like you, I am fortunate to be able to buy extra food, and to be able to store it. We have had power outages and our water shut off. Being prepared and planning ahead has made all the difference.

  30. I am glad to read your husband is feeling better. we go to the grocery store once a week, the ordering online is not great and I super picky about the fresh fruits and vegetables. Also the substitute and I don't like that at all.

  31. Your meals are certainly "fit for a king." Your days do sound lovely, but I know you are looking forward to being with your family again.

  32. Keeping busy in your home with wonderful looking meals, bread making and crafts sounds perfect to me, Lorraine. It's also nice to read that Gerard is feeling better. I too have been going through the pantry and finding what needs to be used up before being replaced and also cleaning kitchen cabinets. Listening to audio books as I work passes time quickly too.
