Yet Another Box

Another dismal day, overcast with grey skies although not cold.  So today is the day, a start is going to be made on the shed and the workshop we may need rescuing there is so much in there.  Half finished projects that have been long forgotten I suspect will be unearthed but time will tell.  There is certainly a large collection of tools that need to be sorted but this is a long job so it is our intention to do a little at a time.  It is paramount that we keep healthy, the last thing needed is a flare up for Gerard.

The craft room is finally all packed up, I found the whole experience enlightening and learnt a lot about myself.  In the end I was unable to throw away all  the children's art  despite taking the time to take photographs.  Some collections matter more than others.  I was able to pack up  a vast quantity of things for the charity shops but was unable to give away anything that had been gifted to me.  It is these little things that make me, I don't think I am going to change now and in truth I don't really want to.  I value things that have been bought for me, the time and effort that family and friends have given is appreciated.  For now I have packed a whole lot more than I thought I would but if need be I will sift through it all again at the other end.

I thought my wardrobes would be hard to sort through but in fact thus far this has been the easiest job.  Shoes are my weakness...

We are now eating out of the freezers, so apart from a little fresh produce we are hoping not to spend anymore money on food.  The menu for this week is quite luxurious, using up a lot of things left over from Christmas.  Yesterday we had a beautiful creamy broccoli and stilton soup with a date and walnut bread.  I can report this was scrumptious, there is enough for lunch again today.

I have finally finished the crochet throw and have made a start on the second one.  A nice break in the evening to sit down and relax with.

What possessions would you find hard to discard?

See you soon.

  1. I'm like you, gifts given to me and personal artwork. I have no problem with clothes and I'm not much of a shoe person.

I've moved a lot when we were first married so I thinned out our possessions every time. Now I move less so I own more!!

  2. You are on a roll, my friend! I am so glad the packing is going well and like you, shoes are a weakness for me {{smiles}}

It sounds like you are keeping sweet treasures and I have an idea I would be the same way with not wanting to get rid of memories.

    Thinking of you! Hugs!

  3. It must be so difficult sorting through your possessions, yet exciting at the same time as it's the start of your new lives. The throw looks beautiful. X

  4. A huge task for certain, but you are right to take it a little at a time.
I love the sound of your lunch...yum!

  5. It was enlightening to read your post today. I think we are much alike, except I don't care much about shoes. I have a very difficult time parting with anything that was given to me. And the way I finally was able to part with some of the children's artwork was to give it to them when they became adults. Their children love looking through the artwork that mommy or daddy did when they were small.

I'm glad you're taking it easy and doing a little at a time. Moving is such hard work! Your lunch looks amazing. I would like to come eat out of your freezer!
    Blessings, Betsy

  7. I'm like you, if someone has given me a gift I find it next to impossible to give it away.

  8. Sometimes you have to be in the right mindset to deal with something so perhaps you will feel differently about your craft things once you are moved and settled, right now things are very up in the air so I expect you did exactly the right thing just to pack it up and revisit it at a future date. Sounds as though you are doing well with other things though so that is good. Hope you don't have too many odd meals from the freezer, it is rather like eating up odds and ends after a big party, but it lasts for longer. You are doing so well with getting things together!! Well done you!

  9. Sorting through all those things and packing is never easy. For me, either I throw too much away or kept too much behind. Sometimes, I will start to look for the things I have given away.

  10. I have moved so many times in the last few years, the first time apart from personal things we sold the house and the contents, it is difficult do what you feel is right, if you can't part with it then don't.

  11. I find anything hard to discard. To me everything has the potential to be useful, and I find getting rid of stuff, whether to the tip or the charity shop, really hard. On another note though, you've reminded me to lift some broccoli soup out of the freezer for lunch tomorrow - thanks!

  12. The last time I moved was almost twenty one years ago and we just packed everything and bought it with us but if I was moving now I could quite happily let go of everything but gifts from family and all the memorabilia such as photos, cards, drawings by Ruby and my dresser.
I don't know what your timescale is for moving but please take time to relax a little if you can.

  14. I can't even imagine how I'd be able to throw away my "stuff". Although I don't do much in the way of crafts I have many collections that mean a lot to me and I'd be sad if they had to be gone.
I am also trying to "eat out of the freezer" and although it's not because we're moving, it's still a good thing to use food before it gets freezer burn. Sometimes there are things one has totally forgotten about!

  15. I was like you and couldn't part with the children's things. The only way I could convince myself to do it was to box up the best and give it to them for their children to go through and see how creative "Mommy" was. And that freed up lots of space for the grandkids to have their stuff center stage.

  16. Gifts that have been made for or given to me surround me and have not been parted with, with the exception of furniture which I parted with, especially on our last coast to coast move. I have a very hard time parting with books and paper, too. I am cheering on your progress in packing, and so glad you are focusing on being well as you do! Your blanket really is lovely. Thanks for letting us admire it. xx

  17. I find my crafts supplies and any and all books the most difficult to part with. Family "heirlooms" and holiday decor also rarely leave my possession. Of course my garage storage loft is full of my now adult children's books, games and Legos. I think I need to start purging.

  19. I treasure the things that have been given to me, and my photographs. Books are always something hard to sort through and my husband has despaired of all the boxes of books every time we've moved.
Your new crochet project is beautiful. You must work very quickly to get the other done already.

  20. I too have art and school work of my kids now adults. Can't part with it. Boy you have a big job ahead of you, pace yourself.
    Love the throw and quilt.

  21. Probably my rubber stamps even though I've not used them in awhile. Books. Jewelry. Glad you got your craft room done, that's one thing to scratch off your list! well done and your food looks yummy!

  22. I could quite easily get rid of clothes and shoes, it's personal and sentimental things which I'd find hard to part with, especially things that have been bought or given by family. Your throw is looking lovely, it's such a pretty pattern.

  23. Getting rid of some of the clothes is usually not too hard for me...many were purchased at the Goodwill anyways! Probably sentimental items like crafts and art work that the kids made...I just can hardly bare parting with that kind of stuff. I will admit though that it always gives me a feeling of accomplishment to purge! Love the beautiful throw and your soup looks yummy!

  24. It sounds like you are making grand progress! I know it was hard to throw out the art work, so I totally understand that! The soup sounds wonderful! And the bread. YUM! Your needle work is so pretty.

  25. Like you I find it impossible to part with personal, thoughtful gifts and things children have made. You seem to be making excellent progress with the packing and have enough energy left to relax with some crochet too. The blanket is beautiful. I shall be keeping my fingers crossed your husband stays well.

  26. Oh boy...moving and packing up. I really need to start getting rid of stuff around here. It has been hard for us to discard books. We finally made a good effort and did weed through several. I have a hard time, too, with giving up dishes. Good for you for your progress. Hope there are no flare ups and you can progress forward.
