Five On Friday

Thank you for all your wonderful comments and suggestions on my last post, it really was appreciated.  We have now managed to source some boxes so a start has been made.  It is amazing how much stuff we have accumulated over the years of living here.  We had a sort out last year and sold many things when we did a car boot sale, I think maybe that was just the tip of the iceberg.  There is a lot to sort through.

One of the major issues for me is the children's artwork.  I have saved every piece that they have made for me, not something that I want to get rid of but realistically not something that I can take.  The perfect solution was suggested by my daughter, I have taken photographs of it all and kept it separate on one memory card so that I can see the progress they make through the years.  It will also show the children how much their creations meant to me.  A win, win situation for us all.

I am joining Amy over at Love Made My Home for the weekly get together to share five wonderful creations.  I usually have a board up in the craft room so that I can see the latest ones at a glance.

A clip for each family, these I shall take with me until such times there is too much on the board and then once again I will take a photograph of each piece.

Here are five earlier pieces that make me smile.

Precious creations and memories that will be stored in my heart forever and of course a tiny memory card can be taken with me wherever I roam.  The perfect solution.

See you soon.

  3. That is such a brilliant idea.
I think I have every piece of paper Ruby has ever put a pencil mark on. They are so very precious but there are rather a lot of them-x-

  7. Oh my! We share a great weakness. I have saved every bit of artwork from my four children through the years. :) It has to be "managed" at some point. Thanks for the reminder of Five on Friday. xo Lynn

  9. Hello, my name is Dazee and I just tried my hand at linking up with Amy for her Five on Friday party. Your grandchildrens art is precious and I can understand your attachment. I have a trunk in our attic full of bits and pieces of moments in time from our children and grandchildren. Putting them on a buzz drive is a great idea! Nice to meet you!

  10. Oh, so precious! I love your idea of photographing them and keeping them on a memory card. I have the same situation with too many keepsakes so this is a wonderful solution! Hope the start of your sort-out goes along smoothly. xx Karen

  11. Such a great idea! I have a difficult time getting rid of any of the artwork or little things that the grandchildren make for me. This is the perfect solution. I'm glad you found some boxes and can get started on the adventure of going through all of your things!

  12. Photographing the artwork is a lovely solution - saves space and preserves the memories. Glad you were able to source some boxes. I looked at a map to see just where the Shetland Islands are - oh my - you will be a long ways away!
    Happy Weekend!

  17. This makes me smile as just last night I carried over to my son his portfolio from his high school art classes. He was quite good but hadn't seen the stuff since he graduated high school quite a few years ago. His kids were excited to see it all and much discussion carried on about it all. Since we are in process of always cleaning out a bit I decided it's time for him to keep it at his house, or let it go. Great idea to take pictures, maybe I should suggest that to him. Congratulations on selling your house.

  18. What a good idea to take photos of all the art work, I never thought of that. I sometimes look at the folder of my artwork my mum kept. It is really sweet to have such lovely memories. x

  19. I love your idea of keeping their art masterpieces together like that. You're so organized! I'm excited for you for the move. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  20. Lovely pieces of art. I had that problem too! I also found it really hard to get rid of some of the Halloween costumes my MIL had made them. They said so much about the kids at that point in their lives. I did the same thing and photographed them.

Happy Five on Friday and good luck with the packing!

  21. What a great way to preserve the grandchildren's artwork without having to actually keep the paper. How I wish digital cameras would have been available when my own kids were young.

  22. I have a drawing my daughter did over 35 years ago still pinned to the fridge! Your solution with regard to the grands' artwork is excellent.

  23. Such sweet momentos! Love anything made with a little hand print. Your sweet memories are worth saving a few from each year. We had three girls and I saved a small box of each one's things. They loved going through the boxes and did so 5 or 6 times each year. I gave them the boxes when they had their own children.

  24. A terrific solution, you will always have the memories but they won't take up so much space.

  26. Thanks for sharing a solution that will work for me as well. I am running out of wall space and don't want to throw out the girls' masterpieces. Cheering you on your moving adventure! xx

  27. I am so exciting for you that you are taking the big step and going on your big move. It will be a real adventure and I am sure that you will make the very best of it and most of it and I look forward to following and cheering you along! That is a great idea to photograph the childrens artwork. I had a thought - that someone else might have already said or you might have thought of! - that perhaps you could eventually do one of those photo books for each child with the photos of their artworks and then you and they could have a memory in physical form, but without every single picture. Whatever you will do, it will be right for you! Enjoy the process in the meantime. Thank you for joining in while you are so busy!

  28. We are in the digital age now and your daughter's suggestion is a good one. I have only some of my children's artwork and of course, some of the grandchildrens', but mostly handmade cards that are easy to store in a box. For me they are tactile and I love looking at them (and old photos in albums). I've moved around a lot and one has to decide what to take and what to leave behind. All the best with the move and this exciting new chapter of your life.

  29. Really pleased to read your good news about a buyer for your house. Another step closer. Having taught mainly 6-7 year olds I love their artwork. I miss my own children's now, still some in the loft if I need to have a peek. B x

  32. There is something about children's artwork that just automatically makes us smile, I think. I actually have a piece a preschool student made me hanging up in my "office" area back here. Great idea to take pictures of the art. I've framed a few treasured pieces my boys have made as well.

  33. How sweet your clips and board are for the artwork! Such sweet creations from your children! I still have my children's artwork.....placed away in a box with their names and ages on it.!

  34. What a brilliant idea! When I was 50, my mother gave me a folder with some of my very early "artwork" in it. I didn't know she had kept it and it's lovely to have it now, just a very few pieces. If only she had photographed the rest to show me. x

  35. Pegs, what a great idea. The girls have pegs on a washing line in the their playroom with all their paitings hanging from it.I have to have a clear out every now and again when it collapses under the weight. I like the grene one with eyes, fun! Jo x

  36. Oh, I love your idea of taking snaps of all of the children's artwork and keeping it. My little grandchildren give me so many sweet things that I'm running out of room so I think I'll start doing just that! I looked at your previous post and I'm excited for you as you'll start your new house search. Thanks for popping in to see me.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  37. That is a good idea. It is so hard to throw away the little things the children and grandchildren make just for us.

  38. I never like to clear and sort through old things. I always ended up holding certain things back and place them back into the drawers or boxes. But these lovely cards are such sweet memories worth to hold on to!

  39. I have two boxes, one for each now adult child, in my mom's basement of all of their childhood creations. I started taking pictures of their creations when the boxes were full. Now I need to get to emptying those boxes. Your daughter had a great idea. Good luck with your sorting.
