My Black Friday

Black Friday seems to have evolved over the past couple of years and has manic shoppers out looking for bargains.  As I have now finished my gift shopping and don't really need anything I didn't want to venture out.  Instead opting to do my supermarket shop Thursday evening.  I was impressed by the amount of yellow stickers throughout the store with varying amounts off.  The fruit and veg with yellow stickers were in abundance.  I picked up 10 packets of tomatoes costing 10p/8p/7p depending on the variety.  10 packets for less than the cost of one.

It was quite amazing, there was the odd tomato that was soft but the bulk were in perfect condition.  I chopped them down and softened them in the frying pan with some onions and seasoning, before putting them into the oven to roast.

I now have several containers all ready for soup/stews/sauces.  I also picked up several bags of apples which I cooked down ready to go with the pork over the festive period.  A couple of apple cakes were also made for the freezer ready for visitors.

There were lots of other yellow stickers that I didn't get, my freezers are bulging at the seams with all of the things I have made already so it would just have been a waste.   A great haul so that I could avoid the rush, can't be bad!

I have made a start on another zigzag blanket.  A red/burgundy one, this time for Honey when they go to Disneyland Paris in the New Year.  I intend to crochet a Minnie Mouse on it for her.

I won't be around for a few days as I am heading down to Amie's they are having a few days away to celebrate their wedding anniversary.  We are blessed to have the privilege of looking after Bertie and Honey, I am so excited.   Amie has booked an afternoon tea for us for tomorrow at a vintage tea room, I will of course take lots of photos and share them with you when I get back.

Did you get any bargains on Black Friday?

See you soon.

  2. I'm totally confused about why black friday has suddenly become such a huge thing, our of nowhere! My email inbox was overflowing!
Your tomato bargain idea though is genius, that I can get on board with.
As I'm here can I take this chance to invite you to Handmade Monday, it's a linky that I've recently taken over hosting of, a small but super friendly bunch of crafty people. We share our projects and visit each other, helping to grow a craft community (well thats the idea anyway) I'm always on the look out for like minded people who might enjoy joining. It opens Sunday eve and runs till Tues eve. No worries if it's not your thing!

  5. Black Friday has crept into Canada as well, even though we don't celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time as the Americans. You found some great bargains at the grocery store! Enjoy your time with your grandchildren. :-)

  7. I don't like black Friday, many of the bargains aren't really bargains. I did go to a local art sale today instead and bought a couple of pretty things. I don't do our weekly shop but I'll ask Richard to look out for bargain tomatoes next time he goes shopping, what a great idea to roast and freeze the lot, perfect. x

  13. I stayed home on black friday as I am recovering from a cold. I did purchase a gift for my hb online. Will get it today. I think interestate will be less crowded than yesterday. There is a "civil war" football game going on will be driving opposite direction. Most of my shopping for gifts is done. Still needing to finish my calendars. Have a good time with your grandchildren this weekend. I think we're watching 2 of 3 of ours next weekend.

  15. It amazes me how countries that don't actually celebrate Thanksgiving , have stores that cash in on the Black Friday sales. Yes it even happens here in New Zealand. Can't believe how cheap those tomatoes were!!

  19. Oh, you are so organized! I would much rather be at home cooking up that delicious food than fighting traffic and crowds on Black Friday. I did do a little online shopping but not much. Love the colors of your zigzag blanket. A vintage tea room with the grands sounds delightful. Enjoy! xo Deborah

  21. I couldn't face the shops on Black Friday, I don't know what it's all come to, stampedes to buy bargains that people never really wanted in the first place, so how's it a bargain? You did well with those tomatoes and they look lovely spread in the roasting tray, they'll be delicious to add to soups and stews. Love the blanket, it'll look very cute adorned with Minnie. Enjoy your time at Amie's.

  28. I definitely DON'T "do" Black Friday LOL. I really can think of nothing worse than battling the crowds. But I also love grabbing a yellow sticker bargain at the grocery store and stocking my freezer with my very own 'processed' creations.
