Winter Project

Sounds rather ridiculous when you say it out loud, a Winter project when most of the country is basking in the sun.  A heatwave, temperatures making record highs all over the Country and in other parts of the World too.  Not here, although the sun is shining a most welcome sight we are still only reaching the moderate temperature of 16 degrees.  It seems to suit Gerard very well his flare ups of RA are not as often or as extreme.  Long may that last!

Our trip to celebrate Lucy's graduation enabled us to bring back this amazing Winter project.

Drum roll please...

A dolls house to decorate and furnish.

We are already browsing some of our books for ideas.

It is inspirational browsing, but we are NOT going to make a start yet.  We intend to save this for our Winter project.  We will work together when the winds are howling around the cottage and we are unable to get out and about to make our Grandaughter's dream a reality.

Wallpaper has already been chosen.

Some of the family need dressing, so patterns have been sourced.

I do need to find some very small patterned fabric, I don't want everything to be plain.  Whilst we have a wide variety of furniture there are no chairs, so another thing to source.

Some of it is in kit form so needs to be put together, exciting times.  It will even have lighting and of course some Christmas decor.  A family heirloom in the making.  We are hopeful that there will be many hours spent together playing with this humble house and that many treasured memories will be made.

For now it is on the list TO DO...we are not sure how long we will be able to resist its charm.  Do you plan ahead for the seasons?

See you soon.

  1. How neat! My one Grandma had one she built and decorated. We were not allowed to touch anything, but we loved looking in all the rooms of it. I'm not even sure what happened to it when she passed. I don't have plans just yet. I'm trying to get through harvest season first, lol!

  2. Have fun, I bought a couple a few years back and did them up and sold them, I would like to find a vintage one to keep and do up for myself.

  3. Exciting! I can look through my fabric boxes to see if I can find something you might like. Is it the pattern that needs to be small, or the actual piece of fabric? You might enjoy this blog: https://mockingbirdhillcottage.com. Claudia enjoys working with doll houses and has some links you might find useful.

I am glad that Gerard is benefitting from the cooler weather and has fewer RA flare ups.

No, I am not so good at planning ahead for the seasons.... x

  11. First of all, I’m so glad that Gerard is doing better with the cooler weather. It’s a good thing he’s not here! It is hot!
Your new project is wonderful. I am looking forward to watching it’s progress when the weather cools off. It looks like you have many things to get started with. Although I like playing with Miss Piper and her dollhouse, I have never had the urge to decorate one of my own. However I sure enjoy watching and seeing others decorate theirs.
Have a lovely day my friend.

  13. What a wonderful idea ! I had a handmade one too ! My mother knitted pullovers and cardigans for a carpenters kids and in exchange he built my doll house with little furniture ! Was very cute. Just after the war there was nothing to buy and people swapped things ! Unfortunately then I had a boy and I think the doll house is still somewhere in the attic !

  14. how lovely, I am oozing envy but doll houses are not anything my hubby would be interested in, he likes BIG projects lol like building sunrooms. I on the other hand like small projects, meaning small items. Don't mind how long they take or how many items as long as they are small.

  20. What a great project for winter. I can envision you two working away in a cozy room while the winds and rain pelt outdoors. Your granddaughter (and maybe some grandsons, too) will love the results of your talent.

I'm planning Christmas presents I'd like to make, but haven't thought beyond that to the winter yet.

  22. I love that wonderful doll house. How fun it will be to decorate it. So happy to hear Gerard is doing so much better in the weather you are having. I love the howling winds. I think it would be so cozy to hear those winds outside and be inside with hot cocoa and work on such a fun project.

  27. That's a satisfying project to do together in the winter months. I still remember the dolls' house that my uncle made for me when I was a little girl. It also had lighting. An aunt made furniture for it. Some chairs were made from conkers with woven backs. It looks as if you can get lots of bits and pieces for dressing the rooms. I know you'll have a lot of creative fun with personalising the house especially for your granddaughter. Other than thinking about when we might get away for a working holiday in Italy I don't plan ahead.

  28. I can see that this is a project which will be right up your street. It's exciting to embark on something new, very exciting, and as you say, it's something which can stay in the family and be passed down the generations to come.
