Surprise Visitor

We had a little visitor yesterday, which made us both smile.  It gave us the run around for awhile, as yet we still can't discover how it got in...it is a mystery!

It is now back where it belongs, along with the rest of its family.

Yesterday was a little poignant for us both, it was a day that we really did miss our family.  The girls all phoned and sent some wonderful gifts and cards and I managed to speak to my Dad.  What would we do without modern day technology?  I did make rather a grand treat for Gerard in lieu of not seeing the girls.  It was a hairy bikers recipe and something that I would definitely make again.  Pork fillet wrapped in bacon with an apricot and ginger stuffing.

I didn't have any dried apricots so I used some tinned ones, it did not detract from the taste.

2 balls of ginger were used along with a little of the syrup.

I bought a large fillet and chopped it into two, a rolling pin was used to flatten it to about 1cm thick.

It was then wrapped in cling film and left overnight in the fridge.  I put it on to cook on our return from Church and it cooked in about 50mins.  Served with veg/gravy and of course the traditional for Sunday Yorkshire pudding.

Progress is been made all the time on the cottage, both inside and out.  The side fence has now been repaired and one coat of stain we are just waiting for a better day, weather wise and I will give it another coat.

The bedroom has had a few additions, I have used some of the checked fabric to cover a couple of the drawers.  A rag wreath has been made, a heart and a bag to store all my hair paraphernalia, not an inch of fabric was wasted.

I have finished the chairs, Harris Tweed has been used to cover the seats, I have to admit to been a tiny bit proud of them.  They look quite good in their new home.

Whilst the rest of the UK is basking in the sun in such wonderful temperatures, we are still only reaching the dizzy heights of 14, showers and of course wind.  We are ever hopeful that it will pick up next week.  The only bonus with the wind it doesn't take long to get the washing dry...and yes we do have to use storm pegs here to keep the washing on the line.  It is a battle to get it onto the line some days.

I have a date with a sewing machine so must get on, what is keeping you busy?

See you soon.

  3. Your bedroom is looking divine. I just adore the colours you have used in there.

Send me just a little bit of your wind and you can have all of the heat and sunshine from here today.
My washing is just hanging there sadly just twitching now and again...which I suppose will mean the dreaded ironing when I fetch it later.

The pork fillet looks and sounds very tasty...I might have to try that one myself as I have two pork fillets in the freezer-x-

  5. The pork looks so delicious. I don't like wind, when I was a teacher the kids were always "wired" when it was windy.

  6. The Sunday Father's Day meal looks so delicious. How many summer-like days are the average on the island? Hope that you have some coming your way soon!

Learned new things here today...storm pegs...Father's Day there same as here unlike Mother's Day...

Now I am wondering about the black thingy shown in the clothesline photo. It's so big...must be important.

  7. What a lovely post. Your Father's Day dinner sounds absolutely wonderful. The wreath, bag, little heart and chair covers are fabulous. You, my friend, are one very talented lady. I'm so impressed with all of your makes. May I borrow you for awhile? Ha! I love seeing your wash hanging on the line. I'm the only one around here that ever hangs laundry outside. And with my back, that hasn't happened much this summer. I have hope you have a most lovely week. Blessings, Betsy

  11. What a delicious looking dinner! I treated Malcolm to breakfast at the local garden centre, which he enjoyed, as we rarely have a full cooked breakfast. I have been busy sewing ...... and I must get the new bedroom curtains made, with their blackout lining - the bedroom faces east, so we are woken up far to early by the sun,as the present curtains just don't keep out the light.

  12. Such a cutie pie graced your garden. Your Father's day dinner looks delicious. I'm sure it was appreciated. I've never heard of storm pegs---I hope you'll show us the difference between the regular ones vs. the storm pegs. The Harris Tweed chair covers are just beautiful. ♥

  16. Thanks for sharing the photos of your wonderful new life. Sorry yesterday was a bad day for missing family. We've grown used to missing the holidays with family since so one is so far apart.

  17. Once we looked out our windows when I was a child on a poultry farm and our yard was filled with sheep that I got to help guide back to their pasture next door. I wonder how your sweet visitor came to visit. Modern technology does help keep us in touch with those far away. My oldest son texted me a video today of him styling the hair of a young man from Germany. Your Father's Day meal and your crafting projects are triumphs! Your laundry looks lovely flapping in the wind and I hope you soon enjoy some warmer temps as we are finally. This morning I worked [played] with three of my grands on reading and writing, and this afternoon I am catching up on blog posts before I drop off some preemie blankets the ladies of our Wed. group made. Not one did I make, but I am making progress on two. Happy Day! xx

  21. I'm enjoying the blogs about your new life with something different happening each time you post! It's good to see all the new makes around your home and the progress on outside jobs such as the gate. With hot and humid weather down here in Yorkshire I wouldn't mind some breezy weather. Windy weather is a positive when it gets the laundry dry!

  29. Sweet visitor you had. I see your sheets hanging on the line and that is where my clothes dry these days. Like to keep the dryer from running when I can.

  31. Really fantastic makes, you have been busy. im in awe at your talent and thrifty ideas. I'm sure your surprise visitor was just saying 'hello', but if it does it too many times, just whisper 'mint sauce' in its ear. Xx

  32. I think it's special days when you do realise how much you miss the family, but technology these days is so good that you're still able to keep in touch. Gerard was still spoilt with that lovely meal you cooked for him. What a cute visitor you had, glad it was safely reunited with its family. Your chairs look fabulous, you've done a great job.

  33. Your Sunday dinner sounds delicious. I'm sure Phil would have liked it too. I like the bag you made from the checkered fabric. Nice seats as well. Good job and thanks for sharing you upgrades to you home. I've just been busy with work, as usual. Also working on Bible study homework. Our temps are warm and getting warmer this weekend. Sigh! Take care!

  35. I can understand about missing family on special days and it's great that technology can keep loved ones in touch at those times. Your special dinner looked wonderful and I'm sure was even better when eaten! The Harris tweed seat covers look beautiful, but I wondered if they would seem a bit warm when seated on.
    Cute backyard visitor too.

  36. I loved this post from start to finish. That darling little lamb. He could come visit me any day.

Your meal makes me want to hop a plane and say, "I came to visit. May we have that stuffed roast meal today?" And I find dried apricots a little strange tasting. I'm happy the tinned ones (we say canned) worked out. I'll make the substitution in the future.

And I love it when someone in a novel from the UK "pegs out the wash". That just sounds so cute for some reason. We hang out the laundry (sounds so boring), but only a few do that, because everyone has a dryer. I miss those sweet-smelling sheets. And we use clothes pins instead of pegs. I fear someday all the differences in language and culture will disappear as the world gets smaller. What a pity.

  37. I agree with Vee - have never heard of "storm" pegs before! I wonder whether a corner of your outhouse will make a calmer spot for hanging washing - here in South Australia, I hang most of my washing indoors because the sun is so hot it fades everything in no time. Maybe you could have one of those 'pulley' washing lines where you hang it on the line under shelter (no wrestling with tangled sheets around you!) and then reel it out to dry in the wind? I hope you get the weather you want so you can finish all of those outdoor jobs.
