Stornoway Harbour

As always I thank you for your visit and comments on my previous post.  Gerard's visit to the hospital was for a routine check up and all went well, thank you.  Your prayers and thoughts were so much appreciated and he thanks you deeply.  It was so nice to feel your love and support.  More blood work is required but this can be done locally at the Doctors surgery.  We have both got appointments next week for the flu jab so that is something else ticked off our to do list.

As we were in town we did go to the supermarket to do a top up shop and a small shop for our neighbours who are self isolating.  Thankfully, it was not busy there were no queues.  There were some noticeable gaps on the shelves, the most obvious one toilet paper.  I can't understand the panic but each to their own.  There were some restrictions in place too, where only three items were allowed.  I am so glad that I have a good store cupboard, I feel  blessed that we are in such a good position.  The pandemic is still very much the headlines on all the news with constant threats of further restrictions.  Time will tell... I find it so strange that there have been no cases on our Island since the original six and yet we face the same constraints as the mainland.  It is getting closer, the numbers on the Uists the next chain of Islands are rising rapidly.  There is talk of a circuit breaker lockdown, where we are locked down for three weeks over the school holidays...again, time will tell!

Again, as we were in town it was a delight to take a stroll along the harbour.  It is always a joy to admire some of the boats.  There was a lot of working boats which are always a joy to see.  We are always thankful to the fisherman for their work as we are such fans of fish.

We were lucky with the weather, it was dry and the sun appeared for a short while which enhanced our experience.  The weather is so changeable here on the Island so it is always wise to wear layers and always have a waterproof. It was a lovely walk and so nice to see the shadows on the still water.  As we walked further along the walkway the leisure boats/yachts could be seen.  Gerard and I (I have shared this with you before) love to chose a favourite and make plans for a trip away.  If only...

Hope you enjoyed our little stroll, there is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by and a coffee house nearby.  Lets sit awhile and enjoy the music.  It was wonderful to be out and about and so nice to catch up with some friends from church quite by chance.  There was a musician playing , such a nice reminder of pre-Covid days when this was a regular occurrence.  A bonus to our morning and really did give us a lift.  These days, its the little things in life that give us so much pleasure.

Time to get a few jobs done and then back to crafting.  What are you working on?  Take care and stay safe wherever you are.

See you soon.

  4. It was wonderful to see your post and take such a lovely stroll along the harbour with you. It's so much fun to dream isn't it? Dennis and I do it often. We have hazy skies again today from the California wildfires. Life is indeed strange this year. I certainly hope your island remains secluded from the virus. Our numbers continue to rise again. My personal thought is because they have school children attending classes again and they are carrying it to and fro as children are apt to do. They don't understand social distancing no matter how much adults try to enforce it. I've been told it's like trying to "herd cats"! :-)
It was so good to read that Gerards appointment went well. Dennis and I will also get our flu jabs next Tuesday. We have our annual physicals in the morning and then the jabs. Dennis also has his dental cleaning before his physical. He'll be all ready to go after Tuesday won't he?!
Take care my dear friend. Say hello to Gerard for us.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  6. Glad to hear that the doctor's appt. went well and that you are all set for the flu jab. I had the Prevnar 13 vaccine for pneumonia yesterday and the pharmacist mentioned that the flu vaccine should be in next week so I'll get in for that as well.
Your walk around the harbour looks amazing. I have a walk with a friend planned for Saturday morning - we'll meet down at the Toronto Harbour - it's the great lake not the ocean but it will do. We'll then meet up with another friend for a coffee on a patio (she's not much of a walker). It will be chilly but we'll bundle up and the patio has a stand of planters around it which helps to block the wind.
It must be very tricky deciding what to do on an island - it's easier to isolate but you still need those deliveries etc. Hope you all stay safe.

  12. When we lived in San Pedro,CA we were about a mile as the crow flies from the Los Angeles Main Harbor. Early in the mornings we would hear the tugboats going out to escort the tankers and container ships into the channel. Some days we would walk down to the marinas to look at all the varied pleasure craft, and other days walk along the quay where the fishing boats were anchored. It's much different now, both shipyards have closed, the fishing industry is all but gone, the big tuna canning factories are closed.
When I was pregnant with #1 (today's his day) on Friday nights after my husband got home, we'd dress up a little and go to a restaurant along the channel and watch the cruise ships leave. Such memories.
Last year we flew to Seattle and boarded a cruise to Alaska, something so magical about being on the ocean and sailing to an adventure.

  15. So many boats to choose from...I wouldn't know how to pick just one.
The fellow sitting on the street-side and playing his guitar made me think of the 4 men I saw and blogged about today.

  16. I'm so thankful Lorraine, that Gerard's appointment went well, will continue to be praying for him! What a lovely day to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather, and to walk along the boardwalk in the harbor. So nice to see the boats, and to dream, indeed. Lovely to sit outside and hear the music. Hoping that the covid stays away from your island, and praying for relief from its misery in the world soon! Much love to you dear friend :)

  17. What a great day for your walk amongst the boats in the harbour. I love doing that, there's so much to see and it's fun hearing all the halyards clanking on the masts. Have a good weekend.

  24. Just read the previous post, Lorraine, and glad to read here that all went well with Gerard's blood tests. Very was nice of you to pick up some items for the neighbor on your Stornoway Harbour trip. The boat and harbor shots were lovely and how nice to enjoy them on an outing. Sadly, we seem to be in this situation of being safe for a while to come. Glad you are both keeping well.

  25. We enjoy walking in marinas and looking at boats. I'm always fascinated by the names - what do they mean and why were they chosen?
Glad the two of you are keeping well. I hope your island stays clear of the virus. We have 4 cases on our island, most of them international travelers who are self-isolating, so little risk to the public.
Have a good store cupboard is important at any time and never more so than now. Enjoy your crafting!

  28. I enjoyed the harbour tour. Glad to hear that Gerard is well and you are getting your flue shots soon. I did so on Friday. I think it is wonderful that your island has mostly avoided the virus instances. Obviously here in the USA we are not so lucky.....or many people are not following the important rules. Stay safe.

  29. That was a lovely outing - really refreshing to be beside the sea.

We are booked in for flu shots 3rd week October. I have had one every year for many years because of my asthma.

Glad you got to the shops - we are trying not to and still having a delivery each week - but I may need to go out in search of loo rolls if Asda can't supply them this week either. Everything else I am well stocked up on.

I hope you escaped the wrath of Storm Alex. Those poor folk in France though . . .

  30. Thank you for sharing your trip down to the harbour. We always prefer going down to the sea or port even for just a short walk it is so refreshing. Live music as well that is a plus!! Madrid has gone into lockdown again...so depressing! At least here in Alicante it is not so bad ...in fact it is like a little haven cut off from the rest of Spain. I wonder how long that will last. Supposedly Storm Alex is on its way to us. stay safe Amanda x

  32. Nice walk in the harbour! boats are so good to look at. We are going to the coast soon and looking forward to that for sure. Glad Gerard is feeling much better and a good bill of health! Thank you Jesus! I have been working on clearing out a bunch of stufff.....not a crafting project. Soon need to make strawberry jam from frozen strawberries I got earlier this spring. Didn't have time to do them then. Next week a good week. Have a blessed week!

  33. I do like to see pictures of a working harbour, thank you for sharing that with us. I agree with you about the pleasure we get from little things now, things which I probably took for granted pre-Covid. I have started going into a shop once a week - I have only done it three times since March - and I've really enjoyed just looking at things on the shelves and knowing that I could take them home with me if I wanted to. I never thought that I would find a visit to a pharmacy so pleasurable! x
