Communion Weekend

It was a busy weekend as it was Autumn Communions at our Church.  The Kirk session was opened on Thursday night where Gerard and I met with the Minister and the Church Elders to profess our faith and become communicant members of the Congregation.  We are now members of the Church of Scotland.  We have enjoyed the services and the wonderful fellowship throughout the weekend.  Everyone has been most welcoming and inclusive, which in its own way confirmed in our own minds that we had made the right decision to worship locally.  We have been going to the local Church since our arrival so it was a natural step to take Communion and indeed become members.  At this point maybe I should just say that we have always been Church of England so we didn't take our decision lightly.  There have been some differences but at the end of the day it is the same God and that is all that matters.  The weekend has brought a new and refreshed enthusiasm, a thirst for knowledge which has been lacking in recent years.

Last week on our trip to the metropolis of Stornoway we did the usual rounds of the charity shops.  I was looking for pudding bowls in readiness for making Christmas puddings.  I didn't have a lot of luck so my search continues.  I did however find a small glass bowl which will be useful for the festive period.

A real bargain at 50p.  I also found a small glass jug which is useful for cream and sauces, whatever the season.  Another bargain at 40p.

Gerard slipped in the bathroom a couple of weeks ago and dropped the soap dish breaking it.  Thankfully he was OK.  I did come across this beautiful shell, the perfect replacement for the bathroom, fitting the theme perfectly.  50p was its bargain price.

Finally, I always browse the patterns and managed to find some crochet patterns to add to my collection.

Each one 10p each.

We are training Mickey back to the floor, he has been a little cheeky of late loving the chairs and settling right into the cushions.  When he was told to get down he took the cushions with him, he is one clever dog.

Here he is in his bed using the chair cushion for his head, he has his own but still favours mine.

Our garden seems to be on the migration route for many birds, we have been inundated with flocks of Canadian Geese and Starlings.  It was at times looking out of the window like something out of the Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Birds.  Sadly the camera is never handy when you want it but I did manage to snap a couple of photos.

We are going to put our feet up today and take things easy, taking our time to reflect upon the events of  the last few days.

As always your comments and support are always appreciated.  I am a little behind in my visits to you but ill be visiting as soon as I can.  Take care.

See you soon.

  2. Good deals on the items you found. That is funny about the dog. My daughter is trying to teach her dog to stay off the furniture too.

  4. Oh my goodness, just look at all those birds, I don't think you're ever short of anything to look at out of your windows. Awww, Mickey is so sweet, bless him. I think I'd be fighting a losing battle trying to stop Archie from sleeping on the furniture. We were full of good intentions when we got him but they soon fell by the wayside. Love your charity shop bargains, you found some treasures there.

  5. There's a flurry of activity in our garden these days, too, with flocks of birds passing through. Fortunately, no Canadian Geese as they can make such a mess.
I hope you find a great sense of community and meaning in your local church group.
    Mickey is one smart dog!

  6. You picked up some good bargains. It did look like a scene from the birds in your yard.
Hope you find comfort and joy in your new church.

  7. Our dog doesn't get on the furniture, she has her own beds in the living room and bedroom. She has never tried to get on them, probably because our older dog, who since passed on, never did so she never thought it was an option. Great bargains. Your church sounds really great. A great comfort to you both.

  8. That is a clever dog. Your finds are great, just right. Interesting about the birds. Several years ago my husband and I did visit Bodego Bay in CA, where they filmed The Birds movie. Still quite a quiet community.

  10. You always find the best things! I love the little jug. This morning I saw a pair of flickers (like woodpeckers) in my backyard and I'm wondering if they might be thinking about nesting nearby.

  11. So glad your hubby didn't hurt himself badly when he slipped in the bathroom.
That glass bowl will be very useful. I also found a bowl at the thrift store this morning. I will post a pic.

  12. I'm glad Gerard did not break something in his fall! It's scary when you're our age to break something.. any age, really. I like your bowl and pitcher.. both will be handy. LOVE Mickey! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  13. Nice glass pieces you found. I saw a Goodwill in a town where wealthy people live. It was in our way home from lunch Sunday so didn't ask to stop. I'm sure there's some nice items there. I'll go another time. Glad you felt at home in the Church of Scotland. Always room to learn more. Even me! Glad Gerard is ok. Falls not good and sometimes scary! Have a blessed week!

  15. Indeed that's a lot of birds ! Maybe there are a lot of worms in your grass. You did very nice bargains ! I love to do that too and am happy when I find something to a real good price. I also think the religion doesn't matter it's God.

  17. Oh golly....that is a lot of birds.

Glad Gerard is OK after slipping in the bathroom.

Nothing on this weekend so I think a charity shop trawl is on the cards as I have not done one for ages.

I wish you joy in your new church.
    Hugs-x-

  20. I always to try to put myself into the picture especially when I read posts from someone in a faraway land, such as you. Somehow it's like reading a story book...I find your posts so interesting and comforting all at the same time. Mickey looks like a really sweetie! And, yes, I would love to join you at your cottage for some chili! :D

  21. I love reading your posts too. Debby said it perfectly, "it's like reading a story book". That Mickey is so cute!! Glad your husband didn't get hurt when he fell. Falls are scary.

  22. So nice that you found a worship community that works for you. That's what counts!
I love finding old patterns and craft magazines, too. You can't beat the prices!

  23. I also like Debby's comments. Your story is fascinating - one I enjoy immensely. I've always heard that man is the only animal that can reason, but I think I beg to differ. Your Mickey had to do some reasoning to figure out the pillow thing.

  24. I like the shell. So smart of Mickey to use the cushion as a pillow!

  25. Congratulations on becoming members of your church! It's such an important part of settling into your new home. I hope that you will be very happy there.

  26. It's always fun to find things at a bargain and here I check out the local thrift stores, which are most likely the same as your charity shops. Finding something that is useful in our home or that I will send to someone is always a fun search. I usually never go in looking for anything, but always buy at least one item or what as the point of entering? Glad to read Gerard was OK and the new soap dish is lovely. We also joined a local church when we lived in VA.

  27. It's good that you and Gerard have been welcomed into a church community that's local to where you live. I'm sure you'll be able to make a contribution there as well as receive blessings from being members of the congregation. I know that you are busy at the moment making and wrapping Christmas gifts and also doing things around the house. I hope all is going well.

  28. I love your charity shop finds the glass jug is gorgeous and the patterns 10p what a find. I completely agree with you about your faith, we are praying to the same God and the divisions are sad. I was raised C of E but my parents didn't attend church. I started going at 16 then converted to Catholic 15 years ago and was very active in my church until about a year ago. I no longer attend but can say my faith is strong, I read my Bible, pray and take my worries to God but I know some feel I am not 'practicing' as I don't attend mass. God knows my heart so that is all that matters, you do what is best for you and enjoy your new church. xx

  29. Ohhhh, another bargain hunter. I really love the shell dish and the glass pitcher. I'd have snapped them up in a minute.

Maybe Mickey is part kitty - they insist on doing things their way.

I love those cute little birds, but glad they're not in my yard right now, as I just had the lawn overseeded and they'd have a feast.
