Home Sweet Home

I am back both to my little cottage and to the blog.  I have been away for awhile, as soon as shielding finished we decided to take the ferry over to the mainland and drive down to see the family.  It was just the tonic we needed, seeing everyone was a joy.  There were many tears of happiness as we saw each little family and were reassured  that they were safe and well.  My parents too are as well as can be expected in these difficult times.  We were sensible and took turns to drive and enjoyed the stunning views, the fauna and flora spectacular.  The stunning Cairngorms  area ablaze with colour.  An eclectic mix of greens of every shade and vibrant purple of the heather against the stark grey of the mountain rocks made for some amazing views.

I must admit after shielding for so long I was a little apprehensive about going out.  My anxiety was not about Covid19 but about the procedures in shops, distancing and such.  A fear of the unknown as we had not been out and about.  We decided to take a trip to town prior to our trip but I must admit that it didn't really help.  We were both a little uncertain as we boarded the ferry but soon relaxed as the day went on and we overcame each obstacle, a stop at the services and a picnic area.  We were a little worried about getting things wrong but were reassured by signs everywhere which were a comfort and boosted our confidence about been out and about.

How those Grandchildren of ours have grown.  Both Hector and Honey start school next month, they haven't had the usual introductions and haven't been to Nursery since March so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't an easy transition.  It is the same for all children starting school so they are not alone.  They were very excited to show me their school uniforms so hopefully the excitement will last.  We are certainly living in strange times.

We spent most of our time away sitting in the garden enjoying the amazing weather.  We certainly got lucky with some amazing temperatures.  Dare I say too hot some days.  Thank goodness for the paddling pools each family had.  What fun we had with the children splashing around in the cooling water.  We were certainly spoilt with food too.  I have yet to weigh myself but feel sure that more weight has been added.  Some serious exercise and a sensible diet is certainly on the agenda.

I know that this trip will be considered unnecessary by some but for us and our mental health it felt like a trip of a lifetime.  With local lockdowns and talk of a 2nd wave we felt that this was the perfect time.  We are back and reassured that our family is safe and well.  We have stocked up on supplies that we need for some of our planned projects over the Winter months and are happy to be back home in our little cottage.  We have some wonderful treasured memories that will keep us glowing for quite some time.  We intend to isolate for 10 days just in case out of respect for our friends and neighbours.  In truth this is no hardship as we have plenty to do catching up with garden jobs which also includes the chickens.

As you can imagine, there is a lot to do here not least a stack of washing and ironing.  I do thank you for your emails and your concern about my absence but as you can see I am well and indeed jubilant about a very memorable trip away.  I will catch up with you all as soon as I can but in the meantime take care.

See you soon.

  1. It sounds like you had a wonderful time and just what you needed after all that time shielding. It will have also put your mind at rest seeing the family, especially your parents, it can't be easy being so far away from them, especially at this time.

  2. I was beginning to wonder where you were so - very glad to hear that it was for a wonderful trip and that it has done you a world of good.
It sounds as though everyone has been very sensible and the fact that you are now quarantining shows just how thoughtful you are towards your neighbours.
My family all live out of town and I am thinking of a quick visit in September - just for a few days. The problem is, they all live in small towns and I live in a city of 3million - so more prone to viral outbreaks and I'd hate to take anything with me. I will think about it a bit more.
Can't wait to hear all about your new projects!

  4. Oh, that sounds like a wonderful trip. So glad you got to make it and see everyone. We are fortunate that two of our children live just 10 miles from us, but our daughter lives 10 hours away. Like you, we are going to see them soon before the second wave of COVID strikes.

  5. Taking a trip to see family sounds like a great balm for your mental health. My husband and I have had visits from each of our two children and it has really helped us and them. It sounds like you did everything necessary to stay safe including self isolating now that you are home. So glad you had such wonderful visits.

  7. You sound truly happy and I'm pleased for you. When your family is far away and you can't visit it's horrible. Luckily my son and daughter do not live to far so we were still able to see them even if from a distance.
I'm hoping there will not be a second wave as it will be chaos. Just been out to get some bedding and lots of stuff out of stock due to them not getting deliveries owing to you know what.

  8. Oh well done, what an epic journey in difficult times but wonderful to see all your family again and stock up for the Winter. I bet they were all thrilled to see you.

  9. Glad that you could make such happy memories and help your mental health. I can identify with some of what you have suffered as my son and his family moved 180 miles away the week before lockdown started. We do telephone and Skype but it isn't the same and as there is a form of lockdown where he lives we can't yet go and visit so haven't seem them properly for 5 months.

I am trying to stock up with some things in case there is a second wave but I do have my own private opinions about this situation.

    Hope you keep ok

  13. I think your trip was a very important and meaningful thing to do. I tell my family that I would rather die than live the way I lived from March through July. It was awful. May the grands adjust well to the new school year. Glad that you found everyone well, including your parents.

  16. I am so happy for you that you could make this trip. We all just need to be careful and do the best we can to stay clean and clear of any contamination. Lots of hand washing and distancing. We need each other . . . Encouraging and helping.

  18. Lorraine, I can just HEAR the joy in your voice as I read this post. I can imagine how elated you were to see each and every person in your family. Alex told us about the heatwave in London and, in fact, facetimeed with us several times showing us the beautiful sunsets from their new flat. It's on the top floor of a victorian house and has stunning views.
I'm looking forward to seeing the projects that you purchased supplies for. You always make such beautiful and imaginative things. I would imagine that everyone is happy to see you back safely home and it's so kind of you to isolate for a few days to protect others.
Take care my dear friend and hello to Gerard too.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  28. I feel like you, I don't like to shop anymore and follow arrows wear masks etc. I want my old life back ! I feel as I am in the wrong movie ! My grandson who lives in Amsterdam, had not so strict rules, because they live outside, but now it also starts and they have to wear masks. It's not a problem wearing masks, the trouble is you can't go out, Restaurants have only restricted spaces, cinema there is nothing, everything has been cancelled. I pity the teenagers who want to go out and dancing and have fun instead they have to lead a dull life ! Fortunately our apartment is very nice and I feel good !

  29. It sounds like just the tonic you needed. Funny old times at the moment and I admire your intention to self isolate. It's very thoughtful.. if only other people would be as thoughtful this dreadful virus might die out. I look forward to seeing photos of your next crafting makes. You make such pretty things

  30. Wonderful Lorraine....very wise to take advantage of the break to visit the family. I do wish others would be as cautious and considerate as you about taking precautions. Some say the 2nd wave has already started here in Spain. Reading between the lines I gather you had a fabulous time with your family. Like yourself I have been wary about going out, imagining all sorts...phobia and fears stimulated by social media which I try to not listen too. Keep well Amanda x

  33. Good for you. Your mental health is important. We were so very happy when Kurt made it home for a week and we got to see he was doing fine.

    God bless.

  34. I'm glad your trip went well and enjoyed time with your family! I miss seeing my grandchildren but Erin has shown photos of them on FB once in awhile. Our county has gotten better and off list of virus concern. Numbers have gone way down. Hope that we can dismiss the need of mask wearing...which I do not like to wear for long period of time. I made a peach crisp this evening and tastes so delicious!!

  37. Welcome home, MM, it must have been such a relief to see the family and to know they are well. Contact with family is the thing we miss the most. Our daughter and her family are in our bubble so we see them at least once a week. Not so our friends and my brother... It's hard at times. Our son lives in Australia and was due to visit this summer. It was, of course, cancelled so we still haven't seen our 4 year old granddaughter in the flesh 😳 x

  39. Welcome home indeed and so glad to read this post about your trip to visit family members, and also a bit envious. We have not ventured on any similar ones, but hopefully by the end of this year. meanwhile we are making plans to celebrate upcoming holidays here at home for the first time in years.

  40. I don't think your trip was in any way unnecessary. We didn't see our family for ten weeks and I found that hard enough, I think the time spent in lockdown made me realise how very much my mental health depends on being with them. Welcome home. x
