Spring Day On The Island

Open Reach have been here the best part of the day.  Not here in the house but clambering up poles and rewiring all the connections.  I am so thankful that all is well and we now have internet and telephone connection, long may it last.  Today James is my unsung hero, he phoned us several times and kept us informed of everything he was doing.  A very professional young man.  The strange times we are finding ourselves in makes us turn to technology more and more to keep in touch with family and friends.

Very slowly and gently we are beginning to see signs of Spring all around.  A little sun makes everything alright.  It is a delight to see the girls strutting around and reward us with eggs daily.

The rhubarb is starting to unfurl its beautiful leaves and is such a welcome sight.

The parsley and mint is starting its regrowth.  The herb bed needs a little work but again it is so reassuring to know it is making a comeback.

The cottage plants have been stored in the garden room through Winter so are now ready to be sorted out and prepared in readiness to go back.  We are going to sort the pots out but leave them in the garden room a little longer as the temperatures are still a little low at night.

Seeds have been set in the hope of growing a few items for the kitchen.  Time will tell how successful we are but certainly worth a try.  I suspect there may be a shortage later in the year...lets hope not!

It was nice to have a little time outside and get some fresh air.  It was still a little cold but warm enough to enjoy the time outside.  We smiled a few times as Mickey had a romp around the garden enjoying a little sun on his back.  Long may this good weather last and we can start to enjoy the great outdoors.  We are blessed that there is so much land in between homes so we are quite isolated and as such protected.  We now have 5 confirmed reported cases of the coronavirus on the Island so we are been extra vigilant and ever cautious as we are considered vulnerable.

It is my Birthday tomorrow so I am thrilled we are up and running once again with the internet.  I am so excited to be able to catch up with the grand children.

As always I thank you for your visit here and your uplifting comments.  Please stay safe and take care.

See you soon.

  4. Good Morning Lorraine! Happy Birthday tomorrow! I enjoyed seeing all of the green in your garden and pots. Our rhubarb has just started poking up through the ground, about 1 inch high this morning so your's is much farther along.
I'm sorry that there are more cases on your island. This is all such a worry and I'm trying very hard to leave it in the Lords hands.
I'm glad your connection to the outside world is better now. Long may it continue to work properly!
Blessings and love to you both,
    Betsy

  10. SNAP! It's my birthday tomorrow too - I shall be 68. I will be Skyping my other daughter and our son. We will have more sunshine, and I intend to go for a lovely local walk - the one with the best views - and see a friend/smallholding neighbour to swop frozen blackberries for eggs, and get some more manure. Last year's birthday outing was a long trip to Wightwick Manor near Birmingham. Home to fabulous Arts &Crafts pieces and the William de Morgan collection.

Have a wonderful birthday and I hope you have sunshine too - we are getting the hot spell in April that we used to have in May when we first moved here back in the late 1980s. No complaints!

  12. You are lucky to be able to work in your garden ! I hate garden work, but a few of my friends love it and they are stuck, they can't buy anything the garden supply shops are all closed. We are now locked in for exactly 3 weeks and two days ! For us it's supportable, as we can sit outside in our garden if we want to, but the poor people in the overcrowded big cities ! It must be hell to live together in little apartments with a lot of kids. We still don't know when we will be released ! Maybe on April 18 or beginning May ! Nobody knows and we are all stuck.
Wish you a very happy virtual Birthday with your family ! Isn't that great that we can see each other and speak together !

  17. Happiest of Birthdays to you! How wonderful it will be to connect with your family by your newly done up internet! Spring is coming slowly here, too. Lots of flowers, but it's still freezing at night so tender plants need protection.

  26. Happy Birthday! Your pictures were a welcome sight. I see in my wee herb space my mojito mint has the smallest sign of coming back. Garlic is doing well. I started some seedlings..they came up. Keeping them alive and thriving something else. Anticipating no farmers markets and such this year, we are attempting to grow our own tomatoes & peppers.

  27. Happy Birthday! I'm so glad you're back and up and running again. It's amazing how we 'need' our computers and phones. We do! Oh, your plants looks so wonderful. The rhubarb brings back memories as my mother used to grow it and make cakes and pies with it. Stay safe, my friend.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  30. First, early Happy Birthday wishes to you Lorraine. I hope that despite being far from family you will have a great video chat. Good that your internet and phone are back in working order thanks to James. Nice to see all the signs of spring in your yard and how wonderful to have fresh eggs as they are still being limited in some stores here. Hope you stay well and safe, blogger friend.

  31. It's certainly a very strange world we are living in! I'm glad that your internet is back up and working. My rhubarb is coming up now too, and the mint is making its comeback. Its exciting to see crocus, and soon to bloom tulips making their way out of the cold earth. Praying for your father. Such hard, difficult times! Much love to you across the miles!

  32. Belated Birthday wishes to you! I hope your internet connection is now sorted and you will not have any further problems. I noticed the mint in the garden springing to life here too. I need to be careful it doesn't run amock. X

  33. I hope your birthday was happy!! It looks like your plants are doing very well. Love the photos of the chickens running about, and soaking up the sunshine. We have some iris leaves poking up through the dirt here. I saw one little crocus the other day, but it has since been pelted by hail. Have a blessed Easter on your Island home. xoxo

Love all the changes Spring brings with flowers and plants.... we've had weather in the 80's and today its dropped to the 50's! Crazy, lol. Stay healthy and I hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend!

  37. I hope you had a lovely birthday Lorraine. The girls look well and happy. I'm looking for a spot to grow rhubarb, I have a gooseberry bush that just started growing, probably from bird droppings, none of us like gooseberries so I think I will use that spot. Take care, and stay well x

  38. Your rhubarb looks amazing. I've been gardening, too. My neighbor said that they aren't able to order seeds in Washington. I guess everyone is growing food again. Stay safe on the island, and Happy Birthday!
